A Rather Late & Timid Review of AM

I do realize there is a lot of negative press going around about AM & I won't be for purchasing from them again should they open up - for many reasons - but I put in this order early in March at the beginning of The Lockdown, prior to any of the flames & fury that followed. This was a very curious & exciting purchase to try and stave off any negativity from being laid off my day job at a local bistro (and I've found myself returning to it lately in the wake of more stress & such). I received my order in late August & have been trying out the twelve vials I ordered (as well as the 7 samples I was sent) since then.
What I ordered: Dreamy, Soft Core, Badass, Dominant Women, Boss, Smut Lust, Blood Musk, Red Musk Superior, Sensory Deprivation Tonic, WTF, Violet Musk, Strawberry Musk.
Samples I Received: Swedish Erotica, Elvis, Jo's Orange Blossom, Send Nudes!, Vanilla Lacey, Catwalk.
Dreamy: Rich, dry cookie like vanilla, peru balsam, Arabian musk tahara, platinum amber & white, creamy amber.
On me, I mean, there's not much other than a lot of vanilla with a crunchy cookie note at the beginning. It lasts for hours. I tend to put it on about an hour before bed and the cookie will fade as I lay down, vanilla will last to the next morning and it dries down to a warmth that has to be the creamy amber note. It is enjoyable but I must say there are plenty other vanilla/cookie/musk scents out there.
Soft Core: Clover-like honey, cocoa, oud & dark woods.
Wet, straight vanilla caramel with a butter note. No honey here, which saddens me as that's one of my favorite notes, but it still smells bomb. Dries down into the oud/woods with an ever so slightly bitter cocoa note. Would not mind finding a dupe for this one, or something similar. Especially if it actually went honey on me.
Badass: Dark aged patchouli, extremely dark black musk, furry brown loud but ground musk.
I dare say... I was quite looking forward to the patchouli and the furry musk I was promised. On my skin it smells clean though and floral. I don't know how. It screams Ylang Ylang from the highest tree branch and does not let up. Whether fresh on my skin or hours later, dry and physically unnoticeable, it's a very loud aura of ylang musk & I am not a fan. If anyone wants it, it shall likely be up for sale ASAP.
Dominant Women: Red Egyptian musk, black cherry, leather whip, black pepper, synthetic ambergris, grounded sandalwood, vanilla absolute, musk mallow, shea & beeswax.
I picked this one for another favorite note - beeswax, and yet again, sadly, it goes very clean & fresh on me. With all the lovely deeper, base notes used in this blend I'd have thunk it to be rich & warm, a little spiced and fruity. Alas, it starts spa-like with a powdery sandalwood note (which is how nearly all sandalwood shows up on me - so disappointing) and dries with just a hint of the pepper, shea & cherry alongside more of the sandalwood (which though powdery on my skin seems to also last AGES no matter what I do to run it off).
Boss: Sassy, bold boozy Cabernet, Japanese strong lightly floral musk, juicy rose.
Much like the description says, it's a lightly floral musk that dries to a boozy wine note. Doesn't particularly scream Boss to me though.
Smut Lust: Creamy, badass girl blend; milky skin musk, creme brulee, lickable body shimmer, cola on the breath, in a vanilla suede hat & halter top.
Creme brulee right off the bat with that crisp caramelized sugar snapped open to reveal a beautiful light musk with the barest whisper of cola. Suede comes in on the dry down. I feel like this should have been called Badass rather than the one Sarabeth gave that label to.
Blood Musk: A deep, intense, uncut black musk from India & very special 8 year aged red musk. Dark, sexy musk.
Oof. This is a dirty, sexy musk. No disguising this as anything other than what it is. No notes other than musk and like... actual dirt. Like I've been digging in the garden. Damn. I mean, it's interesting but probably not a regular for me. Maybe for use when I need to literally ground myself and smell like I've been outside even if I haven't been.
Red Musk Superior: Sharp, intense, sexy, sweet, demanding & SMUTTY AF red musk. Use faintly. Apparent lady magnet.
Wet On Skin: It crawls out sticky and thick; a sweet, smoky, very intense musk. For certain would be paired with some luscious burgundy velvet, faux fur, leather. At least that's the image I get. DEFINITELY put too much on & it was merely a dab. Quite bold & a bit stinky, if I'm being completely honest. Drying & dry: I don't know what I expected, being that this is a MUSK. It's very musky, what else is there to say? Would I call it smutty? Eh. I suppose it does remind me of something one might smell off a very attractive woman around her 40s, picking up sexy younger guys. A cougar, one might say. If this one is anything like Blood Musk, and I assume it will be by the extremely similar consistency, it will refuse to leave for several hours, if not a whole day & a half. Dangit anyway. I'm surround by nothing but this musk with the occasional whiff of Violet Musk which is dabbed on my other arm.
How strange that my grandmother (mid 80s) thinks it's a soft, lovely fragrance. I find it loud & obtrusive and quite annoying that 3 HOURS LATER it is still the only thing I can smell in the bubble around myself.
I will say, with the staying power this house's red musk seems to have on my skin, I do think it'd be a good one to use very, very sparingly to anchor another perfume oil or two, as a layering oil. It's certainly not a standalone perfume - not for me anyway.
Sensory Deprivation Tonic: Soft marshmallow cream, lightly sweet Tunisian sandalwood, touch of Mysore. Blue Egyptian musk, skin milk, dreamy lavender.
Lots of marshmallow, cream, musk & skin milk wet. As it dries the lavender comes out & it's a lavender, vanilla & marshmallow calming scent. After a few hours the lav & mallow is joined by a powderiness which is most certainly the sandalwood. Good for sleep.
WTF: Teal musk, neroli, black as the moonless night coffee, sweetened, no cream, dark 89% cacao chunks, wheat bread.
The shortest evolution ever. Pure coffee & dark chocolate for about a minute, a whiff of wheat bread (which was odd and so short it could have been imagined) and POOF it all disappeared for baby powder & musk. Likely the baby powder is the neroli.
Violet Musk - I was unable to find notes listed for this.
Violets + musk. I suppose that's all that was necessary, really. That is what's in the name. Perhaps a breath of pure golden sugar... when wet of course. A weird grape undertone as it dries. It smells purple, but not royal/vibrant purple like my logo more of a silvery, well, violet purple. The weird grapey note is what flies off my skin of course & being that I am not a fan of grape... well.
Strawberry Musk - same as above.
Strawberry Crunch ice cream. That is what I immediately think of and smell, wet. As it dries, toasted marshmallow, vanilla & a bit of cloyingly sweet fake strawberry. Fully dry, the musk comes out with a drizzle of toasted vanilla cream. I do quite like it wet & once it dries down, but that in-between bit with the punch of synthetic strawberry blechness is not pleasant.
Swedish Erotica: Swedish fish candies, milky skin musk, vintage wax candies, adult featured rose.
When I first put it on, it made me think sugar cookie + white flowers + musk. Don't ask me why, I've no idea. It was just my initial thought without notes in front of me. The cookie fades away & then it's just sugar + musk + flowers. Very nice. Definitely could go for something similar.
Elvis: Toasted marshmallows, amber resin, black velvet orchid, civet musk (synthetic), fruit juice stained cream silk blouse.
Marshmallow, warm fruit, floral musk note but no civet that I could pick up on. Meh. I'll wear the sample til it's gone but, even if I could, I wouldn't buy it myself.
Jo's Orange Blossom - no notes
Wet: Yep, that's orange blossom. Literally sticking your nose over a bottle of orange blossom water. Stays close to my skin. Nice little whiff if I get close enough otherwise it's much like I'm not wearing any perfume at all. Fam can't smell it either so it isn't just me. It's a nice smell though. Perhaps I'll see how it goes with Vanilla Lacey or Alkemia's Trick or Treat. As it dries, it does flutter to my nose a bit more but only in whispers every now & again. Which is nice compared to the experience with Red Musk Superior but I'd like something in between. Just a smidge more oomph. Dry, the orange bit of the orange blossom is lighter & the floral bit comes out more so it does float about creating a very soft, bright, inviting little bubble about me. Overall, I do like it & wouldn't mind finding similar scents for days when I want something that doesn't scream I'm here, I'm here! at the top of its lungs.
Send Nudes! - citrus musk
Flies off the skin, and enters my nostrils whether I'm ready or not. Definitely citrus... possibly lemon peel. Notes of vanilla and something... white (whether floral, amber, musk? I dunno. My nose isn't that good) on the drydown. Ends smelling kinda like candied lemon peel with something else I can't place.
Vanilla Lacey: apparently just a lot of vanilla
Wet on skin - Super vanilla hard cookie like that brand that makes a flavor called English Tea (I think it's Mother's?). That smell. As it dries, that scent clings but something like maybe a light citrus sugar joins the party. The musk seems very light if present at all. Reminds me heavily of VS's vanilla musk but with a really, really light whisper of crunchy cookie at the back.
Catwalk: Nu-White is a sharp rich smelling silvery white musk & makes this blend generously haunt you all day long. Violets, gardenias & rose shine heavenly, softened by bashful vanilla. Lemon sugar sneaks up but adds a zing.
FLORAL musk all the way through with a quick bit of what must be the nu-white at the very beginning - comes across caramelized on me some way somehow - unless it is the vanilla coupled with the lemon sugar. Either way, it goes much too floral on me. I'll likely gift to my mom since she likes florals & musks.
Definitely open to suggestions of other houses that do musks well. I never thought I liked musks but apparently I do? If they're done well. Also, good patchouli blends. And beeswax. And honey. I likely won't be ordering for a while but I'll never stop having a wishlist of perfumes & other lovely scented creations!

[MILESTONE] Agricultural Conclusions

Results

Republic of France

The western and central regions of la Metropole are perhaps the most useful for the federation’s needs, showcasing exemplary production of beef, dairy, pork, poultry and various fruits, especially apples. The introduction of a domestic beef and dairy industry has faltered somewhat in the Madagascan highlands due to lack of proper economic support, so the ability to open up grazing lands to economic use would further diversify the federation’s production capacity and export potential. Other interesting things of note are the potential for a domestic wine industry in the southern highland region, the same area whose climate permits commercial wheat cultivation. The breeding of Charolais and Zebu cattle in an experimental program based out of Dijon has also borne fruit, as the resulting ‘Canchim’ cattle have far superior meat to the Zebu without losing its characteristic heat resistance.

Democratic People’s Republic of Algeria

Algeria’s most useful data is in the cultivation of pulses, especially lentils and other forms of beans that are not a significant crop share in Madagascar. Similarly to other legumes, such products would prove quite useful in crop rotations due to their ability to fix nitrogen, provide forage for animals, and manufacture fallow. Chickpeas and lentils seem perhaps the most likely to serve these roles.

People’s Republic of China

The Pearl River delta has provided a treasure trove of information. While sharing many agricultural characteristics with the rest of monsoon Asia, the region has remained peaceful after the end of the civil war and was thus far safer to access than much of Southeast Asia has been. The most revolutionary conclusion is this: the rice-fish system. The use of various forms of carp as consumers of weeds within irrigated rice paddies has observably increased rice crop outputs by roughly 20%, and the labor cost of maintaining the fish is balanced out by the lack required man-hours for weed control. Additionally, the irrigation and fish-rearing methods themselves are quite simple to replicate across almost all of the rice-producing regions from the eastern coast through to Mahajanga. With the introduction of non-competitive Nile Tilapia and azolla ferns as fodder, the synergy of rice production and fish rearing would both increase yields and provide a stable source of protein.

Chinese production of shrimp and seaweed was also a useful lesson, considering that Madagascan shrimp are of high quality and potential. Some consideration has been given to the concept of using brackish water pond systems akin to the Chinese model in order to build a multi-trophic harvest. Unfortunately, this will likely take investment and technological support structures that the federation remains incapable of accomplishing at this juncture. A final surprise was the high demand in East Asia for sea cucumbers, both as a delicacy and a traditional medicine. Considering their ubiquity in parts of Madagascar, they could also serve as a way to boost the income of poor farmers.

United States of America

The United States had by far the most to share from North America, both in terms of processing and sheer industrial might and mechanization, but also in regards to diversity of crops and growing conditions across the country. By far the most useful cereal crop study was conducted with maize, whose cultivation seems quite viable from the central highlands across the southwest of Madagascar proper. Additional lessons came from critical developments in regards to use of peanuts, also traditionally cultivated in Madagascar, to fix nitrogen in a three year rotation with maize.

Perhaps most notable is the previously unexplored potential for Madagascar to be host to cotton and hemp production akin to regions of the Southern US. Cotton’s potential for spurring on a domestic textile market is obvious, but according to studies the Americans shared, hemp could be so much more. It’s more efficient for making paper than wood pulp, and versatile enough to serve as a rough textile for canvas, fabrics and mulch.

Other suggested crops that could be grown for diversification of the Madagascan diet are tomatoes, okra, cherimoya and several types of squash, as well as additional cultivars of coffee, bananas and citruses.

Federative Republic of Brazil

Brazil’s Amazon rainforest is the greatest single region of biodiversity on the entire planet, and her spectacular mismanagement is a warning to be remembered. Madagascar’s own vast diversity of unique species has huge potential for pharmaceutical, genetic and tourist value, and clearly levelling the place just to get two years’ worth of use from the thin topsoil is not a worthwhile endeavor.

As for other crops, Brazilian investment in the banana industry has produced a significant banana economy largely independent of the American corporate cudgel. Other large and small agricultural industries of interest are pineapples, sugarcane, guaraná, watermelons, oranges, açaí, avocados and cacao.

Republic of Indonesia

Indonesia was a treasure trove for Madagascar’s future foreign trade opportunities. The production of cash crops for export, especially spices and flavors, is like no other. The federation’s indigenous ylang-ylang and ramontchi can follow this model, and the federation has clear potential to expand into the market for cinnamon and cloves which has been disrupted by violence. Cacao production for chocolate is also in the cards, befitting the tropical climate of the northeast.

Other useful examples of staple crops are cassava and plantains, quite suited to the wet eastern coastline and outlying islands. Breadfruit can also provide a useful source of starch and calories in the northern tip of Madagascar. Hawai’ian taro did not originally seem of much use, but seeing the cultivation of similar tubers in Indonesian climes, it may be viable as a new staple in the northwest of the country. The local tuna and crab fisheries also provided models for mid-term maritime development.

Republic of India

India is vast but largely uninspiring in regards to direct agricultural lessons, at least compared to other equivalent-sized powers. However, it provides useful lessons on how to manage a dairy industry in a warm monsoon climate, as well as unique methods of managing sugarcane and sorghum cultivation. India also inspires potential for minor export markets in black pepper, turmeric and rare corals.

That said, there is at least one amazing program to watch: the Green Revolution on the march. The booming crop production in the Punjab is extraordinary, with high-yielding variety (HYV) seeds and genetic disease resistance causing an enormous boost in output. However, it is concerning to Madagascan observers that the seeds being used rely on substantial irrigation of a type only possible in portions of the island, which would exacerbate economic inequality between ethnic groups. The seed acquisition process could also leave the federation beholden to foreign interests, which is exactly the opposite of the Resampa administration’s policy line.

Dominion of Canada

Canada was certainly a change of pace for the Madagascan scientists, most of whom had not been anywhere colder than Metropolitan France. That said, it held interesting examples of agriculture in subpar conditions, and an exquisite fishing and lumber industry. Overall, the most useful takeaway was the lobster industry, which showed a potential future source of income for the communities of the southeast around Sainte-Luce and Taolagnaro, in which lobster fishing is far more primitive. Should the government find ways to provide those communities with suitable harbors, boats and access to world markets, the profit margins would be substantial.

Additional observations of wood pulping and trawling methods were made, but these proved mostly unsuitable for the federation’s territories. However, they were notable for their wanton disregard for the future, which most Canadians seemed completely unconcerned with. It appeared that the potential to run out of trees or fish was not one that they had wrapped their heads around, which was in strong contrast to the Madagascan understanding. In recent decades, the French attempts to establish a rubber industry on the island had permanently scarred many forests, and left many without their traditional sources of food and income. The possibility of someone not understanding the potential for this to happen seemed almost comical, but those Canadians are strange people in general. The lack of recognition of the unsustainable nature of Madagascan “Tavy” agriculture demonstrates a level of hypocrisy on the part of the researchers.

Kingdom of Norway

Norwegian fish hatcheries were fascinating. The use of specialist facilities to grow fish past the fingerling stage via induced spawning and other such methods would be difficult to replicate in the federation’s territories, but perhaps still a worthwhile endeavor. Hatcheries and dedicated stocking ponds could be combined with the East Asian fish-rice farming system if only there were enough resources available to make it work. Another possibility would be seeding native species of seagoing or brackish-water animals, such as sea cucumbers and shrimp, for export. On a related note, Norwegian hydropower is a sight to behold, and difficult to avoid taking notice of due to its direct connection with fresh water management and fertilizer production. Perhaps this could be a step in the right direction.

Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

While Soviet documents were less openly accessible than in most other countries, there were still significant lessons to be learned across the course of the observational tour. Primarily, the focus of these studies was on root vegetable cultivation in Tula, most notably sugar beets, potatoes and yams. While sugar beet cultivation is perhaps less than an optimal fit, lessons learned in potato and yam cultivation could make a significant difference in terms of providing bulk caloric content in subpar soils across the edges of the highland zone. The Soviet model of collectivization was also an interesting study, though not very practical in Madagascar.

Commonwealth of Australia

The fifth continent has recently become a significant trade and investment partner of Madagascar, and the federation now stands to gain from their agricultural industry’s knowledge and practices. Australia’s agricultural economy is nearly as diverse as Madagascar’s, with production ranging from barley to sugarcane, oranges to tomatoes. Their most important contribution by far, though, is in the livestock industry.

The Australian cattle industry is a thing of beauty, organized as a major force for exports across Europe and especially East Asia. The organized cattle station system of the Top End is an economic marvel, and could be replicated via responsible state-observed grazing stations in the less populated highland regions. Smaller operations across South Australia and Tasmania also provide significant lessons on best practices for individual family and community cattle raising. Solid foundations on small-scale poultry, pig and lamb raising will also diversify the Madagascan diet and agricultural economy.

Republic of Finland

The Finnish forestry management process was unfortunately not very applicable to the federation’s experiences at home. On the plus side, however, Finnish fire control methods were relatively helpful. Additionally, the rapid development of the Finnish agricultural industry has demonstrated some of the world’s most modern land-clearing methods, especially in terms of neutralizing acidity and draining marshland. The Finnish experience of domestic self-sufficiency in difficult climatic conditions is also admirable and worth holding up as a model.

State of Israel

Israel’s agricultural industry is like a man-made oasis, with drip irrigation being the principal feature. While the material start-up costs are significant, the water savings potential is high and the ability to easily accommodate irregular and unlevelled fields opens up new opportunities for exploiting more of the country’s open land area. With detailed guidance on how to operate different forms of drip irrigation systems to avoid complications such as clogging and water wastage, the federation’s southwestern region will be able to experience a slow-rolling renaissance in production of staple vegetables, cherries and dates.

30+ Alkemia reviews from my finicky nose to your eyeballs. Hits, misses, and everything in between

I finally finished reviewing my ENTIRE Alkemia order! I went a bit nuts and ordered quite a few things to try. This was my first time purchasing from Alkemia and I had mixed results, but overall I found a number of new potential favorites and at least three that I would buy in a full size bottle. Alkemia aquatics don’t work for me but I like their leather, musk and incense blends a lot, and the simpler scents work better than the more complex ones. They don’t have the best staying power but that’s pretty typical for me.
I would definitely buy again but this is a brand I need to try samples of before buying a FS. I have very tricky skin chemistry and I found I had a similar success rate with them as I do with BPAL (so about 50/50), as opposed to Solstice Scents which I can pretty much blind buy from because almost everything works.
Anyway, I try to keep my reviews short and sweet while still being descriptive! I do make a number of comparisons to other brands because I personally find it helpful, so maybe you will, too!
Here’s a link to my previous Alkemia reviews (their Ode to Oudh sample pack)!
FAVORITES: Book of Shadows, Fleurs Historiques et Cacao, Gothique, Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, Roll in the Hay, The Romance of Lust, Supernatural, Lady Luck
LEAST FAVORITES: Academy of Pleasure, Amber Gris, Blackberry Noir, Evil Temptress, Sandscape
And now on to the reviews:
1891
Based on a 19th century recipe for a fine gentleman's cologne. A delightful anachronism of French lavender buds, mandarin peel, lime leaves, bergamot, bay leaves, coriander, clove, nutmeg, ginger flower, pink pepper, elegant white carnations, heirloom tree rose, opium tar accord, and woody amber resin nestled in an embrace of precious oriental incense woods.
I mostly bought this for my husband, but I figured I would test it, too, since I sometimes like more masculine fragrances for myself. And yet… when I put this on, it’s much more feminine than anything! I get a lot of carnation with herbs (lavender and bergamot, mostly, with a touch of bay) and a sprinkling of ginger and spice. It’s quite pretty but it goes powdery after a little while.
On my husband, it smells more masculine and fresh. He describes it as “crisp.” I asked him to be a little more descriptive and he said it is a scent for “either a classy Victorian soiree or pedaling down the boardwalk on a penny farthing.” How versatile!
Absinthe and Laudanum in the Afternoon
An intemperate intoxication of galbanum, laudanum accord, tonka bean, vetivert root and narcotic wormwood swooning into an euphoric delirium of opium poppy, poet's jasmine, and french lavender.
This was a freebie that I did not pick. On my skin, I get a lot of lavender and laudanum, everything kind of swirling together in a haze. This is very strong and something in it is threatening to give me a headache. Luckily for me, it fades super quickly and I am left with kind of a flat lavender scent. It’s not so great, but at least my head feels ok.
The Academy of Pleasure
An indecent proposal of red and golden ambers infused with a bottle of fine cognac liqueur, a suede waistcoat hurriedly abandoned on an antique chair, a haphazard tangle of bergamot scented linen sheets, cardamon-hashish coffee, and a cedar lined cigar humidor.
This sounded sooo promising but unfortunately, I can’t even think of anything to write about it because it almost instantly completely disappears on my skin. I smell a lightly sweet, vaguely musky, faint linen scent. It is almost like I’m wearing nothing at all.
Acadia
A portrait of coastal Maine - balsam fir pine needles and oceanic Atlantic fog tinged with seaweed, bay leaves, saltwater, and charred driftwood.
I was really excited for this scent because I love Maine and I’m sad that we had to cancel our annual trip downeast this year. This is mostly a masculine aquatic with a lot of smoke. I don’t get a lot of pine, but it’s very salty and the bay gives it a cologne feel. It reminds me a bit of BPAL Calico Jack or Jolly Roger but somehow less... piratical, if that makes sense. This is an outdoorsy, oceanic scent and it’s not the kind of thing I would wear, but it smells really good.
Ambre Gris
A rare blend of proprietary perfumery ingredients carefully oxidized by sunlight, sand, air, sea salt, water, and ocean minerals. The result is as changeable and morphing as the ocean... earthy, sweet, musky, saline.
I was hoping this would be an aquatic along the lines of something like Solstice Scents’ Sea of Gray (the best aquatic I have ever smelled and one of my all-time favorite perfumes), but it is more standard “ocean” bath and body scent on my skin. There is a nice salty note on top but underneath it is soapy, almost floral, and the musk is probably white musk which does not get along with me. It’s really strong and because I don’t like it, it has crazy throw at first. 😂 This makes me want to sneeze. It dries down to a soft, vaguely salty scent that still tickles my nose.
Blackberry Noir
A delicious, dark trinity - black berries, black tea, and sweet black musk. Mouthwateringly sexy.
This starts off with a blast of dark berry scent and then the musk takes over. This is a softer, gentler black musk than I am used to. It starts to go a tiny bit powdery after a couple of minutes. The tea is there but it mostly just lends a bit of an astringent character rather than smelling like actual tea. It dries down to a pretty generic berry musk that does nothing for me.
Book of Shadows
heavy parchment paper, ancient iron oak gall ink, crumbling leather bindings, and wafts of rare incenses.
I KNEW I would love this and it did not disappoint. Leathery papery incense goodness! There is a hint of a peppery ink note that l love and rich, resinous incense (not smoky). The leather note is brown and dry. I am pretty much guaranteed to love “old book” scents and when you add this delicious incense to the mix, it’s perfect for me. The dry down is mostly sweet, resinous, incense (I don’t know why but it smells purple to me) and is really nice. I would compare it to: BPAL India Ink, The Lurid Library, Midnight Mass
The Center of the Universe
The center of our universe is raspberries and rum? In a vast dust cloud at the center of the Milky Way there is an abundance of ethyl formate, a simple aliphatic ester found in the smell of rum and raspberries. To these elements, we've added notes from astronauts' descriptions of the smell of their suits when they return from space walks - freshly welded metal, gun powder, seared steak in an iron pan, burnt almond cookies, charcoal, and ozone.
Whoa! My first thoughts: this is totally unique. I don’t think I have anything quite like this in my collection. This sounded so weird and interesting that I just had to try it and I am glad I did. There is a little ozone, something fruity, a toasty hot metal note- it’s strangely wearable and I find myself compulsively sniffing it to figure out more of what I am smelling. As it dries down, the fruity raspberry note dominates and it starts to smell weirdly like Froot Loops with an ozonic background. It has very good throw. This is worth trying if it sounds at all interesting to you- I’m glad I got my sample.
County Fair
The nostalgic scent of an old-fashioned American carnival midway - pink cotton candy, hot kettle corn, freshly fried funnel cakes, candied apples, and saltwater taffy.
Although I’m not super into foodie scents, I want very much to smell like carnival food and so I keep trying these kind of perfumes, usually in vain. This actually works better than average- there is the sweet cotton candy, sugary dough, a hint of apple- kind of a candy shop vibe! It reminds me of being on vacation and going into a touristy little store where they sell caramel apples and taffy and other treats. It’s a pleasant, nostalgic scent. Would I wear it a lot? No, but I am happy to have smelled it and to have it in my collection!
Enigma
Iso Super E is an enigma of synthetic perfumery. Often described as anti-perfume, Iso Super E is often hard to smell on yourself, but it creates a subtle aura of scent that others will pick up but often will not be able to describe.
The “anti-perfume” description intrigued me so much that I had to try a sample of this. I am really glad I did because I can now recognize this note in a LOT of other perfumes. It definitely has that “your skin but better vibe” but after a while it gets really papery. I like the papery stage a lot! I could actually see myself wearing this by layering it with other blends.
I asked my husband what he thought about it and he said, “You smell like a tree.” I genuinely do not know where he got that from but ok.🤷‍♀️
Enkindled Spring
A springtime flirtation of coriander, green galbanum, bergamot tea, vanilla leaf, spiced lavender, sweet clover grass, coffee flowers, enkindled by the inviting glow of clove buds and green amber.
To be perfectly, honest, I can’t remember why I bought this because it sounds too herbal and green and flowery for me! On my skin, it’s pretty aggressively floral with a lot of heady greenery. There is a touch of herbal lavender and a teeny tiny dab of vanilla. It has a powerful throw but it is just too much floral and too much green for me.
Evil Temptress
A naughty elegance of saffron, pink pepper, Ceylon cinnamon, spicy carnations, bourbon roses, pears soaked in honey cognac, cashmeran, hay, tonka, dark caramel, a titilating flick of leather, black opium, and cardamon infused patchouli.
This was a freebie, not chosen by me. It smells really nice at first, but all the notes quickly blend together and it’s hard to distinguish much. It reminds me a bit of some big name conventional perfume I’ve tried but I can’t remember which- it has that vibe, though. I do get a little patchouli, some spice, some tonka, and caramel that quickly goes flat and plasticky on me, which makes me sad. This has a lot of potential but just doesn’t work for me.
Farkas
Savagely sexy skin musks and deliciously sinister leathers. Irresistibly dangerous…
When I sniffed this in the bottle, I got really excited because it is intensely leathery and musky and I thought it could come close to filling the BPAL Brom Bones-shaped void in my collection (I have a decant of it but never managed to get a full size bottle, and it has haunted me ever since). On my skin, it’s not quite the same- the musk here is REALLY nice and the leather is authentic but more of a brown/suede leather than the black leather I was looking for. It dries down to a soft skin musk with suede and has decent throw.
Feuillemort
A meditative rumination of dying leaves, smoked autumnal spices, dried grasses and fungi, Tibetan incense, cedarwood, rum soaked agarwood, and borneol.
This is a really nice incense and hay blend (the hay reminds me a lot of BPAL Hay Moon from like 2008 or something- one of my favorites). I like the general incense notes that Alkemia uses a lot- it reminds me a bit of the Japanese incense I burn at home all the time. Feuillemort starts off with a really good throw but dries down to a soft close-to-the-skin scent, like I’ve been sitting in a room with incense burning for a long time. I like it but I generally want my perfumes to be a little more intense.
The First Dandelion
A springtime daydream of sunny dandelion flowers, green dandelion leaves, and warm dirt.
Dandelion is one of the few floral notes that I actually really love. When I first put this on, it is a BLAST of sunny, green, fresh dandelion and I love it. It dries down to a softer, slightly powdery fresh green floral that I still really like. It smells yellow and green and HAPPY. I wish I got more of the dirt note, though. I don’t think this is my holy grail dandelion scent (I think that is still BPAL Roadhouse) but I really like it! The later stages are mostly greenery with a little bit of soil in the background. It mostly disappears after a while; my skin just totally absorbs it.
Fleurs Historiques et Cacao
A paradox of the decadent and the divine - erotically dark cacao and uplifting French lavender blended with piquant black cardamon pods, a splash of tea with lemon peel, and an elegant flirtation of grapefruit blossom and vanilla musk.
This is an exceptionally unique scent! The cacao here is DRY and dark and not at all foodie. It’s also not super prominent but instead serves to ground the sharp, herbal lavender and spice along with the soft, sweet vanilla musk. The citrus is not prominent but just brightens the whole blend. This is complex and refined and I really enjoy it! As it dries down, I get more of the vanilla musk and I really like it. This is a scent to wear to an elegant afternoon tea or something.
Gateau d’Anniversaire
A festivity of fresh baked golden layer cake drizzled with rosewater-strawberry glaze.
I was not expecting to like this but wowww this is a very tasty cake scent! It’s rich and buttery and lightly spiced. I am not a cake person and I would eat this cake! The sugary rosewater glaze kind of gives it a gourmand edge, but this is a pretty solidly foodie scent, which makes it all the more unusual that I am such a fan. It has good throw and doesn’t seem to morph much. Pros: I smell really good. Cons: Now I am really hungry!
Gothique
The scent of midnight mass in a medieval cathedral. A Byzantine monastic incense recipe of Somalian frankincense, styrax benzoin, Arabian myrrh, cassia, spikenard, canella, Liquidambar orientalis, labdanum, Atlas cedar, and vetiver.
I love incense, especially churchy incenses, more than just about any other fragrance. This is a gorgeous, complex incense that is just a little bit smoky from the vetiver. (It’s like incense was burned in the cathedral recently but maybe is not currently burning.) It’s sweet and resinous, heavy on the benzoin, and is pretty unique among the many incense blends in my collection. A definite keeper and I might have to buy a FS.
Hexennacht
Freshly turned spring earth, new grasses, and an incantation of thirty-seven ceremonial incense elements that have been aged for thirteen lunar cycles.
At first there is a blast of fresh green and herbal grass (maybe even a hint of a minty scent) over dirt (more of a dry earth than wet soil) and burning incense. The grass and earth notes fade and I am left with a pleasant but pretty generic incense blend. It doesn’t have much throw and does not morph much after reaching this point.
June Alchemy
succulent alchemy of fresh wild strawberries and blackberry musk.
This starts off with a blast of bright, intense strawberry candy (like that really good soft strawberry licorice)- a tiny bit tart but mostly very sweet. I get a berry/musk scent that is similar to Blackberry Noir, but I like this a lot better. The strawberry is really delicious! It dries down to a light musk base with sweet strawberry on top. A fruity, summery scent that doesn’t smell like body wash! Amazing!
La Flamme
Rare spices steeped in root tea, incense woods, and oakmoss.
This is a weird scent and I am struggling to describe it. I don’t get a lot of spices from it- it’s kind of a musky light woody scent with a lot of oakmoss. It’s a bit on the perfumey side for my taste. It’s pretty powerful, has a good throw and does not morph much as it dries.
Lady Luck
guaiac wood, vanilla musk, coriander aldehydes, mandarin, red and green peppercorns, and a whisper of Fast Luck incense.
JUICY fresh mandarin over smooth wood and a heady, delicious vanilla musk. There is a little bit of peppercorn, just enough to tickle my nose. Unexpectedly delightful! I wasn’t sure how I would feel about the mandarin (citrus notes are not usually my thing) but it really works here. This would be a great daily perfume for me, reminding me a little of one of my favorite BPAL standards, Love Me.
L’Encens à la Vanille
Madagascar Vanilla, golden amber, and resinous incense swirled together with a selection of beautifully aged incense woods and a dusting of aphrodisiac Silk Road spices.
I am not sure what is going on here because I mostly get lavender??? I think the amber and vanilla are combining to create a very nice sweet, musky vanilla scent but on top of that is sharp, herbal lavender. Maybe one of the spices?? There is a bit of a resinous vibe and it kind of smells like dry stick incense before it is burned. It dries down to a soft vanilla musk, which is actually really nice but not at all what I was expecting! Sadly, it’s completely gone after around half an hour.
Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure
An opulence of cashmere sensuously perfumed with rare Japanese boudoir incenses, luxurious caramel pralines, vanilla orchids, bergamot, orris root, candied lemon peel, and a splash of champagne.
I wasn’t sure how this would work for me BUT I am a big fan. Vanilla orchid is one of the few floral notes that I consistently enjoy and the musky cashmere and Japanese incense are gorgeous. I LOVE Alkemia’s incense notes. There is a little bit of sparkle from the champagne and the caramel praline lends a dark sweetness but not a foodie vibe. I really can’t stop sniffing it- it’s so good. OH, and it actually lasts on my skin!! I think this will be a FS purchase for sure.
Miel de Sauvage et Tabac
Sweet, spicy pipe tobacco flecked with wild honey, beeswax, freshly crushed honeycomb, the pollen of forest blossoms, and smoked black amber. Warm. Dark. Golden. Luminous. Untamed.
Warm, dry tobacco sweetened by honey. It doesn’t morph a whole lot and I don’t get a lot of amber or beeswax. I wanted this to be a stickier, gooier sort of scent but it’s pretty dry and subtle. It is quite sweet and the tobacco is pleasant but not quite what I was hoping for. Medium throw, fairly light scent.
Prairie 66
A free-spirited, herbal-fresh summery blend of Sage Flowers, Aldehydes, Grapefruit, Linden Blossoms, Bergamot, Saffron, Gray Amber, Yucca, Yuzu, and a touch of cool concrete.
Heavy herbal sage, sparkling aldehydes and a touch of citrus with some white florals in the background. I wanted to smell the concrete but it’s just not there for me. This is overall a very pleasant scent, bright and summery. The sage makes it almost wearable for me (I really like the herbal note, and it’s very prominent), but it’s not my usual sort of perfume. My skin also completely eats it and after about 20 minutes, it’s totally gone.
O Tea!
Five exquisite teas - hibiscus, green pearl, orange pekoe, Early Grey, and salt tea enlivened with neroli blossoms, coriander, green cardamon, rosewood, ripe starfruit, pink pepper, vanilla sandalwood musk, a green snap of stemone, and creamy fig.
Starts off weirdly medicinal and then there is a BRIEF moment when I get a really lovely floral tea scent but then it just turns to straight up shampoo or body wash. I used to have this starfruit body wash (I think it was from the body shop?) when I was like 12 or 13. This kind of reminds of that. It takes me back! But the soapy vibe does not work for me so I have to pass on this. I think there is just too much going on here.
Roll in the Hay
A delightful romp through dried hay, fresh green grass, early summer wildflower honey, vanilla grass, vanilla leaf, and wild poppy.
I love this! I don’t know what vanilla grass is exactly but it smells REALLY good. I love hay and grass scents (despite being hideously allergic to the real deal) and this is perfect, lightly peppery green notes with vanilla goodness. The honey adds a beautiful sweetness and there is a fresh, almost minty note on top? This reminds me a little bit of Solstice Scents’ Mountain Vanilla with the fresh greenery and coumarin notes but I actually like this better. Sooo nice! I might need a full size.
The Romance of Lust
Randy dirt-sexy patchouli, black vanilla, salaciously sticky honeycomb, and a darkly concupiscent amber infused with botanical pheromones.
I LOVE this patchouli. I can’t stop smelling it: there are a lot of sweet patchouli/vanilla scents in my collection, but this is one of the best. It’s a smooth, earthy patchouli with deep dark vanilla and creamy sweetness from the honey and amber. It reminds me a lot of BPAL Silky Bat, which is a favorite of mine but is hard to find, so I am glad to have another option! The dry down here is soft and sweet and cuddly. So nice.
Sandscape
Sun warmed beach sand, Atlantic ocean breezes, the saline-aquatic scent of drying sea water on skin, and the faintest hints of tanning oil and seaweed.
Ok, so now I know that Alkemia’s aquatics are not for me. This just smells like a “beach” scented candle to me. It goes a little bit powdery, almost floral, and I don’t know what else to say because it is just very resoundingly not my kind of scent.
Sigil
A recipe in an ancient 16th century grimoire that includes olibanum frankincense, lignum aloes, bdellium, styrax, black honey, and euphorbium; the essence of "Stones of Immortality" - opium thebaicum, dried citrus, and the quintessence of gold; and an alchemist's compounding of coffee beans and ritual herbs.
Very warm and complex! Sweet honey and dry resins, a sprinkling of dry herbs and citrus, something a bit sharp and unusual. I very much wanted to get more of the coffee bean note but it’s just not there. This is really strong and has great throw. If you want to smell like a mysterious alchemical potion, I think this is for you. It’s a very interesting scent but unfortunately for me, it vanishes after a few minutes.
Silken Tent
Candied angelica, chrysanthemums, white flowering Nardo, clove flowers, jasmine-scented rice pudding, blonde caramel, infused with golden amber.
This is a really pretty gourmand based on rice pudding! I love rice scents and it works sooo well with the amber and light floral notes. The buttery caramel combines PERFECTLY with the amber and creamy rice notes and caramel is usually horrible on me so I am very impressed with this. It’s such a pretty, comforting unique perfume... but my skin absorbs it completely and after a little while I can hardly smell it. I would buy a FS of this but it dries down to be SO faint 😭
Supernatural
An ethereal blend of Iso-E, ambrox, Tonkin musk (cruelty free), and aroma molecules
I was especially curious to try this after testing Enigma. I like Supernatural better but it’s really a completely different scent! I absolutely love the musk here and I definitely get the “personal aura” vibe. It smells really really good and I can’t stop sniffing my wrist. This would be the perfect scent to layer under perfumes that could benefit from a little boost of musk, but it is also amazing by itself. I smell really good- creamy, woodsy, musky, a little salty, but somehow also not quite like any of those exactly. I may need to buy more of this.

New Alphamusk collection AKA Sarabeth is about to vibe check us all

*disclaimer i'm not affiliated with alphamusk* Sarabeth put up her new "Vibes" collection about a day ago?? But now all of the descriptions are up for all 52 new scents! According to her esty she has about 20 bottles of each scent atm BUT whichever scents are the best sellers from this collection will become part of the permanent collection!
the vibes listing and all the new scent descriptions from her Etsy:
YOUTHFUL- is a blend of cream soda and skin milk it’s has the essence of a soda cream musk! Not overly sweet and very layer worthy to add a soft non-aldehydic creamy sparkle to scents. I feel as a preteen I always wore some vanilla bullshit and I am still quite the vanilla bullshit fan!
CHEERY- holy cow i am not a citrus lover at all but I’m in love with this blend, in fact I’ve worn it frequently as my daytime perfume of choice. This is a blend of a sugary iced tea, sugared ginger slices, and lemonade to make the sweetest Arnold Palmer. A barely detectable touch of skin musk to sleek out the vibe. Not too sweet but tons of sugar? I don’t know how but I did it. And y’all love tea so this is sure to cheer you up. And makeup-less Monroe has me swooning...
SHY- why why whyyyy can’t I just bathe in this! This will be permanent for sure as long as I can find more of the star of this blend, which is a arabian musk tahara, these are almost glue-like in texture and each have their own irresistible skin like sweet vibe this one smells like coconut and vanilla so I decided to amp that quality and I slowly cut in a coconut butter note, more of a desert actual butter and coconut not like the odorless oil, and marshmallow fluff. The musks natural vanilla quality sort of does it’s thing. It’s so soft and sweet and lovely with nothing to complicate it.
NO BULLSHIT- straight up red musk superior and my cool finished realistic leather and not a note more was needed, no bullshit!
MISCHIEVOUS- this starts with a dirty oak barrel aged brandy, some smooth sweet African green musk mystifies the blend and caramel apple makes you completely irresistible so you can basically get away with anything. I fucking love this one too! It’s not hyper seasonal even the Caramel Apple note often leans fall-ish.
CRAZY- sweet pistachio moist cake, (non oakmoss) green moss, the creamiest skin musk because you’ve crazily buttered up over and over again and a hefty dose of a gardenia lily perfume. It’s kinda all over the place and fucking delish!
SCHEMING- Salt water taffy blended with a golden amber accord. This is a rich blend of intoxicating ambers from all over that have a golden tone towards them. It smells so good it’s not overly sweet but the salt water taffy certainly adds an unusual twist to these ambers.
PLAYFUL- is a blend of a floral lightly minted musk, I use it as an unusual faint mixing musk sometimes. Next I added orange blossoms, neroli and cognac and it comes off really smooth and bright and well adult-playful though scents are ageless it is less youthful than you may expect a playful blend to be
BOSS- this is my first wine perfume and I definitely made it a boozy Cabernet. It almost gives me a wino drunk just sniffing at it. It’s sassy and bold and I use this Japanese strong lightly floral musk and some juicy rose to top note it off and let the wine remain the star of this blend like the boss it is.
SULTRY- is heady! it starts with a black cherry which I lend a bunch of orchids too and I keep that as the only floral in the blend. Smokey incense, and i added my favorite green Moss this is not an oakMoss, I didn’t want it to lean like a chypre. It’s finished with a beautiful soft Japanese musk which is a little less clean than a China musk and theres a touch of bourbon vanilla. this is not a vanilla scent; it’s quite aloof and carefree!
JOYOUS- is like a day sipping tea at a local bakery wearing your favorite sweet Rosey perfume. It’s got a cake mix note (slightly drier and less creamy cake note) and a sweeeet rose accord and a little bit of an atmospheric bakery vibe that has many elements like wax paper, flour, touches of cocoa.
EXTRA- oh I love this one! it is a blend of a house blend oriental chypre I have yet to pull out in any other scent as of yet. It’s like a chypre noir, sexy and soft. it has a lightly powdery non-baby powder vibe it with some chai tea this one sneaks up on you it comes out spicy and then soft and then sort of sweet
LEAVE ME BE- is a cold scent. It contains a blend of a note that I created by accident I call ‘stone wall’ which is essentially an industrial accord with a little bit of an earthy quality to it and a cooler green tone because it has a mass note. It contains an dark brown lightly animalistic with spice Arabian musk which I mellow out with a smoky oud and I just had to add some patchouli but I decided to go with a light white patchouli, the only thing sweet is a dollop of pistachio paste and then there’s some mud to keep people out of your business is a nice solid strong mud note but it’s blended so beautifully you can’t really tell that it’s there. just adds depth and attitude. Overall this leans a little bit traditionally masculine but this is just alpha style as everything is unisex.
VAIN- sugary spruce, spiced sugary chewy ginger, a classic uncomplicated chypre, and some caramel popcorn. It’s spicy, bold, the spruce makes it a bit cold, the ginger makes her sharp, and she can’t stop sniffing her fabulously interesting self.
EARNEST- Dry, sandy smooth desert like scent with some rose water musk. Lemon and lavender are quiet components that make it genuine and unique, subtle and kind.
SHADE- a stormy atmospheric accord cut with an earthy imported green Indian musk, that’s soft with some herbal qualities that’s blended with a minor touch of shifty animalistic musk. It’s casting a storm over whatever you shading you powerful bitch!
SWAG- rootbeer anyone? Says the babe wearing soft patchouli and violets and royal musks
COY- cotton candy ice cream in a sugar waffle cone and a coy babe wearing the perfect skin musk gardenia perfume
PLEASANT- this so close to my heart as I’d Sade but anyway the notes are a gorgeous soft rose with spices musk from Morocco, some sea minerals (not ocean think more rocks/salt air by ocean) and then some fresh city picked baltimore mulberry pie! It’s like eating mulberry pie at a sandy/yet grassy foragey bay beach on one of those super hot days that take you by surprise in early fall. Mulberries grow wild in Baltimore and I used to have some in the backyard of one of the many places I rented. Kids would knock on our door and ask if they could have some mulberries off the tree and they were so cute and pure about it, and nice to ask! Since the house was empty for ages they were familiar with the yard but still asked. Anyway they got me into mulberries which are a sweet mild berry similar to a blackberry but smaller and a bit grounded/earthy quality, somewhat mild.)
SPACEY- made with my son, Nico. A clear Blue-toned blending musk, blue Egyptian musk, blue cotton candy, skylite blue snowball syrup (another Baltimore thing but think less tropical blue Hawaiian flavor), some marshmallow on top of the snowball (Baltimore thing part 10888) and why not some bread to throw at the ducks while we eat our snowballs (even tho we aren’t supposed to 🤭)
COOL- soft clean cool af iris and a long cashmere sweater with some soft suede boots and vanilla woods to frolic upon
BADASS- dark aged patchouli, extremely dark black musk, and a furry brown loud but grounded musk
WHAT THE FUCK- teal musk, sharp heady Neroli, black as a moonless night coffee, sweetened, no cream, dark 89% cacao chocolate chunks, and wheat bread. It’s like wtf but still affable? I can’t figure out why I like it.., but I do! (teal musk is a blend of african clean mean and green musk, soft sweet Egyptian blue musk)
LOYAL- musk tahara, a mixing 70’s style musk, soft lilies and extra lilacs and a bright sparkle, a pheromonic glow, it ends up being a very unique lilac bright white musk with a skin but better vibe
SWEET- strawberry banana shortcake, sparkle, rose water musk, creamy amber
Dreamy- a rich dry cookie like vanilla, gentle relaxing dry peru balsam, arabian musk tahara, platinum amber white, creamy amber, this is a creamy beige soft lightly sweet ‘nude’ sweet skin musk with the tiniest hint of a sparkly musk bite
SEXY- aged amber resin, and a semi sweet benzoin resin soaked and dissolved in a sandalwood bourbon blend, topped with my favorite imported black musk, leather with the tiniest dust of patchouli, sweet Jasmine sambac cut down by a powdery soft jasmine, imported red musk, agave, more soft musk. This perfume was sexy but it wasn’t enough so I blended in cheesecake and it turned divine and I was like ok, now this is SEXY sexy lol
PERCEPTIVE- an Irish cream musk over a platinum white soft sweet yet strong mysterious amber
BITCHIN’- bourbon vanilla, more Kentucky bourbon, load up the cedarwood, and some charred wood too and give me all the creme fucking brûlée
FIERCE- Neroli, red clay, chewed bubble gum, soft cookie vanilla, a hefty dose of luxurious dasmascas rose, touch of red musk, sugar in the raw, and spruce
CANID- bergamot and lavender over this soft magic dust with its tame aldehydic notes, over a mild amber musk touched by warm spices, tame ozone and light sandalwood with a barely noticeable rose, lotus and lily touch
CYNICAL- sea minerals, oud, patchouli essential oil, black river musk, and dead leaves
SAD- faint perfume of soft roses, violets, tuberose, ylang-ylang, lily-of-the-valley, and rich amber on a skin musk base, covered in tears, elements of ozone lurk quietly
BEAT- planting soil, a Russian earthy brown musk, faint incense buzzing, clay and dust and some ‘I’m toasted’ marshmallow...
CAUTIOUS- blue musk over Egyptian musk with Egyptian blue musk (just in case there’s not enough! That’s 3 musks, to be sure) and a elegant midnight vanilla with quiet dry peru balsam
GLAM- plumerias, ambergris, on a bass of sparkling clean musk
MINDFUL- ylang-ylang with some peru balsam, 3 different types of cedarwood and clove over a mushy brown sugar
SOULFUL- wormwood, moss forest notes, cognac, and exotic spices on a base of sandalwood and sheer dreamy vanilla
MELLOW- blend of a modern fresh dewy musk, Egyptian red musk, sweet pink musk, milky skin glow and more dew, rosewoods and Buddha wood
PRETTY- sweet jasmine, Powdery vanilla accord, Egyptian musk
CHILLING- oakmoss, amber, Italian bergamot, touch of creamy sweetened warm milk by the fireside
SULLEN- decayed areas of the forest in springtime, things were recently fresh but they aren’t getting enough light to flourish. A bit of imported rich earthy green musk, dark NBC woods, aged bark, moist lichen and trees oozing sweet resins
INTUITIVE- oatmeal stout, brown sugar, a rich dark royal musk
RELAXED- (my great-great aunt Edie adams on label) 100% natural blend of bergamot, sage, lavender and rosemary over some rich golden sandalwood dried a bit with my favorite relax note, peru balsam
GOTH- goths are often the sweetest at heart and passionate, they just get the human condition a bit more than most and are coping in their goth ways. This is a rich black musk (one of my fucking favorites) from India and a midnight vanilla (not to sweet but rich and Devine)
PRIMAL- furry musk, animal pheromones on top of human sexy-what what! pheromones, white leather, I salted some of my chypre and added rich imported rare brown deer musk (it’s extracted from musk deer ‘sprayed’ seed pods— no deers were harmed in the process but just trust weird musk process because, it’s out there) the salted chypre makes this blend do something to me! Or is that the load of pheromones?
ON EDGE- aged patchouli and fresh patchouli essential oil, very herbal green amber (almost smells like fresh gasoline at first but it chills so nicely after the initial wet application) dark rich and earth Tunisian amber, more of my favorite imported rich black musk attar from India, saltwater air foggy atmosphere, sweetish african Green musk, moss, and worn out black suede shoes
RESTING BITCH FACE- started with my first amber incense blend which was based on sharp bright amber accord and clean cathedral-esque musk, then I added some middle eastern spices and some of this mentholated floral accord. It’s sharp but it chills and has its moments.
DEVIOUS- 100% natural simple blend of blood orange and patchouli
CHEEKY- cheap but delish grape wine cooler, cotton candy, gummy bears, over some vanilla supreme drugstore lotion
CAMPY- agave sweetens this intensely fruity blend of lemon & lime, honeydew, watermelon with a touch of bergamot all over top of the perfect soft yet bright and lightly sweet and sexy but very uncomplicated musk base, it’s a veryyy fruity melony citrus surprisingly wearable blend
PSYCHIC- stone black amber, red musk superior, Nerolina essential oil, blood orange essential oil, frankincense e.o. And some ginger e.o.
FEMME FATALE- royal musk and sweet honey like you stick to red musk, dosed with heavy Damascus rose, smothered in bourbon vanilla, tobacco with a patchouli bite
CONFIDENT- classic top note of Orange blossom, soft neroli, with aldehydes gardenia, with mid notes of clary sage, bergamot, orris, narcissus, and a base of oakmoss sandalwood and golden amber
SLEEPY- faint touches of orris dry paper and leather books, rose toner on my face, clean inviting cotton sheets, and my soft vanilla perfume, and creamy rich vanilla lotion, maybe there’s bourbon by my bedside too? I don’t know, maybe in my single life! this is how I idealize sleeeeepy, my reality is usually on the couch because my baby doesn’t like sleep lol
Edit!!! the last two scents! :
MOOD- resonating warm musk and skin warmed amber is blended with patchouli, spiced muhuhu wood, sandalwoods, Buddha wood, dash of blackened dry suede and dusty vanilla bean. bergamot, lavender and ylang ylang are echoing but it’s mostly about this earthy grounded woodsy musk
ZONKED- sweat, blood and tears. a pulsating body musk that’s ready to....get it.. go to sleep. it’s got a slice of that active sporty musk just cut with exhausted sweaty musk and nuances of booze, old hose watered down perfume, it has that earthy sun kissed rust vibe of water that’s coming out of a warm outdoor hose that’s been unused for far too long

Caffeine: The World's Drug of Choice

(This is an article I wrote 20 years ago for a magazine that folded before they could print it. I just found it and wanted to put it to some use. I hold the copyright, and I hereby put it into public domain.)
Caffeine: The World's Drug of Choice
The true origins of humanity's love affair with caffeine, the most popular drug on earth, are lost in antiquity, but many cultures have stories of its discovery. Some of these stories may be true.
Caffeine is found in many plants throughout the world. The most common are tea (Camellia sinensis), coffee (Cofea arabica or robusta), chocolate (Theobroma cacao), cola (Cola acuminata), guarana (Paullinia cupana var. sorbilis) and Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguarensis). The active ingredient in some of these plants has a different name and a molecule that differs slightly from caffeine, but all produce the same effects in the human body, and I'll call them all caffeine here.
Tea: The eyelids of Bodhidharma
This fifth-century monk who brought Zen to China from India is believed to have meditated facing a wall for nine years. The story is told that he cut off his eyelids to stay awake, and from his eyelids grew the first tea plants in China. With 30 mg. of caffeine per cup for green tea and 50 mg. for black, tea makes it possible for all of us to stay awake (though probably not for nine years) without cutting off our eyelids.
Coffee: Gift of Allah
Coffee is the second most popular beverage in the world, after tea. Some historians believe its use as a stimulant originated in ancient Abyssinia (Ethiopia), which is the plant's original home. Another story is that it was first eaten by goatherds in southern Yemen, who noticed that their goats were friskier after eating its leaves. Arab traders were roasting and selling the beans by 575 CE. It is said that a mullah who had trouble staying awake during prayers saw a goatherd eating the leaves, asked why and, after trying it, decided that Allah had sent it to help the faithful stay alert in His service. This is somewhat more credible than the eyelid story.
Six ounces of brewed coffee contain about 50 to 75 mg. of caffeine, depending on species, growing area and preparation. Robusta has much more caffeine than Arabica. People who are sensitive to caffeine can be adversely affected by even 10 mg., which is why decaffeinated coffees typically contain two to five mg. per serving.
Coffee may not make any of us as frisky as the average goat, but it can still help us to stay awake during prayers.
Chocolate: The Real treasure of the Sierra Madre
The fruit of the cacao tree is just one treasure among the many stolen from the Aztecs. The Aztecs and Mayans believed that drinking chocolate would bring great wisdom, understanding and energy. It was originally reserved to the upper classes. It was certainly used very early in religious ceremonies, and by 1000 CE was circulating as money. American GIs in World War II found that it could still serve as money, rivaled only by Coca Cola and nylon stockings.
Chocolate may not confer wisdom and understanding, but at 5 to 10 mg. of caffeine per cup, combined with sugar, it ought to increase one's apparent energy for a while.
Chocolate bars contain about 25 mg. of caffeine per oz.: your child's chocolate milk packs 1 mg. per oz.
The Kola Nut: Not just a commercial myth.
About 120 years ago a Dr. Pemberton marketed Coca Cola Syrup as a brain and nerve tonic. Its active ingredients, besides sugar, were derived from coca leaves and kola nuts. In its first year, advertising costs were about 150% of net income. Cocaine was dropped from the formula early on, but Coke might sell even better now if it had been kept in.
The Nigerian Yoruba use the cola nut in naming ceremonies. It represents longevity to the Yoruba, because the nut doesn't fall from the tree until fully ripe. That this is also true of other fruits and nuts doesn't bother the Yoruba.
A 12 oz. can of Coca Cola contains 36 mg. of caffeine. A can of Jolt delivers 72 mg.
Guarana: There's more than trees in that rain forest
Guarana is widely believed to have been discovered by the Guarani. This is not believed by several other tribes who, like the Guarani, have outrageous, but wildly different myths about its discovery. In the U.S, it is most commonly sold in 500 mg. capsules, each containing 25 mg. of caffeine. A company in Brazil is aggressively marketing a soft drink based on guarana (50 mg. of caffeine) that they hope will displace Coca Cola. The rain forest is full of myths.
Yerba Maté: Better living through herbs
Prepared like tea, this drink is also widely used in South America. It, too, may have been used first by the Guarani. Any other tribespeople who have a better story are welcome to tell it to whomever will listen, but the Guarani do seem to have been tireless experimenters with potential drugs.
Yerba Mate contains 25 to 150 mg. of caffeine per serving. Which puts it between coffee and tea on average, though there are strong teas and weak coffees.
Of the 196 volatile chemical compounds found in yerba mate, 144 are also found in tea.

Review on Organic plantation agarwood from Bangladesh

Review on Organic plantation agarwood from Bangladesh
Let me say first that I have very little experience with the raw agarwood in general. I have tried only 4 types of agarwood so far. feel free to correct me if any of the information in this review is not accurate.
after a very satisfying experience with the previous agarwood Koh Do session, I went for searching agarwood that suits the following criteria. [Affordable, Daily burn, No chemical injection, Trustable vendor]
I have come across this particular vendor after spending quite of time searching for it.
here I introduce you, 'Bangla Cacao Organic'.
blind buying fragrant material online is always risky. so I need to be sure what I'm buying is legit. I won't tell you why I believed this vendor because everyone has different rules for trusting others. do your homework if you want to know more details about this vendor but let me only focus on the product in this review.
I bought 100g of this plantation agarwood chips for $150 USD.(currently discounted for a moment. originally $190). 100g will last me for a LOOOOONG time.

100g of oud chips
I don't know your knowledge of plantation agarwood so I'll briefly talk about it in my knowledge. most agarwood coming from Vietnam, Malaysia, China on the market is from chemically injected trees. though each farm uses different materials. most of them are harmful to humans. (for instance, Gramoxone)

as you can see in the below picture, there are consists of patterns you can find in plantation agarwood. the shape of the chip, resin formation, drill hole for inoculation.
Close up look on agarwood chip - 1
Close up look on agarwood chip - 2
Close up look on agarwood chip - 3
this particular plantation agarwood is inoculated but didn't inject any chemicals in them. that's why it's called 'organic'. One of the most praised standard testings of high-quality agarwood is the sinking test. whether it's sinking because of resin or wood fiber...
Sinking Test
it doesn't sink into the water but sinking isn't always related to the scent itself but the amount of heavy content of the chip.
there are also painting practice for counterfeit agarwood. so you need to cut it into half to see agarwood is fully infected to the inside.
Agarwood chip cut into half
as you can see, this one is fully saturated with the resin. which is a good sign of genuine agarwood.
but the most accurate testing method is just smelling itself. no other testing is better than smelling. period.
I usually burn my agarwood on Shoyeido mini incense charcoal but I'm out of stock of that. so I went with the coconut husk charcoal that goes hotter and longer than Shoyeido one.
Charcoal method
opening of Bangla cacao organic reminds me of spearmint. a refreshing, little bit of sweetness, cold breeze. middle to end phase gets more on the sweet side eventually turned into the dark chocolate-like aroma.
I had to lay down due to its intensity when I first tried it on the charcoal. I felt like drunk or high.
it's very surprising how plantation agarwood can goes up to wild stuff. yes, it lacks some depth and something I can't pinpoint but the difference is not that significant.
burning it on the electric burner is also fascinating because I could sense more subtle nuances on the electric burner and enjoy it longer. (tiny silver goes more than 3 hours on the 260℃ but adjusts it up if you want more intense aroma.)
the charcoal method is more suitable for those who drink time to time and the electric burner is suitable for those who want to relax and chill out.
I'm writing this review because I'm very satisfied with this purchase and want more people to enjoy this kind of experience too.
one more interesting thing I want to talk about is how each kind of agarwood smells similar in the end phase of burning. they become quite similar sweet scent. maybe that's the DNA of agarwood...? I need to experience more agarwood to confirm it.

Additional note
this vendor sent me FIVE samples of oud oil for free that I don't even ask for... what stunning customer service! maybe it made me biased a bit. but hey, who doesn't like free samples?
Five oud oil sample

Edit: Added price for the product.
Edit2: I can't confirm the general plantation practice in Bangladesh and India is a chemical injection. the vendor says some of them uses chemical in their tree but most of the farmers don't use chemical but only do inoculate because they don't have the budget for the chemicals.

Guide to the Jungle

Jungles are not just tigers and primitive tribes. They are a thriving ecosystem that comprises many terrains, each with its own plant and animal life and challenges to character survival.
It is the goal of this post to add some more visual and literary terms to your DM vocabulary, as well as presenting some thoughts on survival and a list of potential monsters.
Never get out of the boat. Absolutely goddamn right, unless you were goin' all the way. Kurtz Hippo got off the boat. He split from the whole fuckin' program.

Post Soundtrack

NOTE: This was a bitch to put together. "Jungle" ain't really a thing. Its a catch-all term. I've had to trim a lot of ideas down and cut some out altogether just to keep from dipping into factoid overload. Strap in, this is a long one.

Geographical Traits

A jungle is land covered with dense vegetation dominated by trees. Application of the term has varied greatly during the last several centuries. Jungles in Western literature can represent a less civilized or unruly space outside the control of civilization: attributed to the jungle's association in colonial discourse with the British Raj. Therefore, the nearest equivalent scientific term is probably monsoon and seasonal tropical forest.
There is no standard jungle. The tropical area may be any of the following:
  • Rain Forests
  • Secondary Jungles
  • Semi-evergreen Seasonal and Monsoon Forests
  • Scrub and Thorn Forests
  • Savannas
  • Swamps

Rain Forests

There are five layers of vegetation in a rain forest. Where untouched by man, jungle trees rise from buttress roots to heights of 60 meters. Below them, smaller trees produce a canopy so thick that little light reaches the rain forest floor. Seedlings struggle beneath them to reach light, and masses of vines and lianas twine up to the sun. Ferns, mosses, and herbaceous plants push through a thick carpet of leaves, and a great variety of fungi grow on leaves and fallen tree trunks.
Because of the lack of light on the rain forest floor, there is little undergrowth to hamper movement, but dense growth limits visibility to about 50 meters. You can easily lose your sense of direction in this jungle, and it is extremely hard for aerial creatures to see you.
Rainforests are forests characterized by high rainfall, with annual rainfall in the case of tropical rainforests between 250 and 450cm (98 and 177 in), and definitions varying by region for temperate rainforests.

Secondary Jungles

Secondary jungle is very similar to rain forest. Prolific growth, where sunlight penetrates to the jungle floor, typifies this type of forest. Such growth happens mainly along river banks, on jungle fringes, and where man has cleared rain forest. When abandoned, tangled masses of vegetation quickly reclaim these cultivated areas. You can often find cultivated food plants among this vegetation.

Semi-Evergreen Seasonal and Monsoon Forests

The characteristics of the these forests:
  • Their trees fall into two stories of tree strata. Those in the upper story average 18 to 24 meters; those in the lower story average 7 to 13 meters.
  • The diameter of the trees averages 0.5 meter.
  • Their leaves fall during a seasonal drought.
  • Except for the sago, nipa, and coconut palms, the same edible plants grow in these areas as in the tropical rain forests.
You find these forests in portions of Columbia and Venezuela and the Amazon basin in South America; in portions of southeast coastal Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique in Africa; in Northeastern India, much of Burma, Thailand, Indochina, Java, and parts of other Indonesian islands in Asia.

Tropical Scrub and Thorn Forests

The characteristics of these forests:
  • There is a definite dry season.
  • Trees are leafless during the dry season.
  • The ground is bare except for a few tufted plants in bunches; grasses are uncommon.
  • Plants with thorns predominate.
  • Fires occur frequently.
  • You find tropical scrub and thorn forests on the west coast of Mexico, Yucatan peninsula, Venezuela, Brazil; on the northwest coast and central parts of Africa; and in Asia, in Turkestan and India.
  • Within the tropical scrub and thorn forest areas, you will find it hard to obtain food plants during the dry season. During the rainy season, plants are considerably more abundant.

Tropical Savannas

The characteristics of the savanna:
  • It looks like a broad, grassy meadow, with trees spaced at wide intervals.
  • It frequently has red soil.
  • It grows scattered trees that usually appear stunted and gnarled like apple trees. Palms also occur on savannas.
  • You find savannas in parts of Venezuela, Brazil, and the Guianas in South America. In Africa, you find them in the southern Sahara (north-central Cameroon and Gabon and southern Sudan), Benin, Togo, most of Nigeria, northeastern Zaire, northern Uganda, western Kenya, part of Malawi, part of Tanzania, southern Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and western Madagascar.

Swamps

  • Saltwater
Saltwater swamps are common in coastal areas subject to tidal flooding. Mangrove trees thrive in these swamps. Mangrove trees can reach heights of 12 meters, and their tangled roots are an obstacle to movement. Visibility in this type of swamp is poor, and movement is extremely difficult. Sometimes, streams that you can raft form channels, but you usually must travel on foot through this swamp. Everything in a saltwater swamp may appear hostile to you, from leeches and insects to crocodiles and caimans. Avoid the dangerous animals in this swamp.
You find saltwater swamps in West Africa, Madagascar, Malaysia, the Pacific islands, Central and South America, and at the mouth of the Ganges River in India. The swamps at the mouths of the Orinoco and Amazon rivers and rivers of Guyana consist of mud and trees that offer little shade. Tides in saltwater swamps can vary as much as 12 meters.
  • Freshwater
You find freshwater swamps in low-lying inland areas. Their characteristics are masses of thorny undergrowth, reeds, grasses, and occasional short palms that reduce visibility and make travel difficult. There are often islands that dot these swamps, allowing you to get out of the water. Wildlife is abundant in these swamps.

Terrain

Because explorers initially traveled through tropical forests largely by river, the dense tangled vegetation lining the stream banks gave a misleading impression that such jungle conditions existed throughout the forest. As a result, it was wrongly assumed that the entire forest was impenetrable jungle. This in turn appears to have given rise to the second popular usage of jungle as virtually any humid tropical forest. Jungle in this context is particularly associated with tropical forest, but may extend to cloud forest, temperate rainforest and mangroves with no reference to the vegetation structure or the ease of travel.
One of the most common meanings of jungle is land overgrown with tangled vegetation at ground level, especially in the tropics. Typically such vegetation is sufficiently dense to hinder movement by humans, requiring that travelers cut their way through. This definition draws a distinction between primary forest and jungle, since the under-storey of tropical forests is typically open of vegetation due to a lack of sunlight, and hence relatively easy to traverse. Jungles may exist within, or at the borders of, tropical forests in areas where the forest has been opened through natural disturbance such as hurricanes, or through humanoid activity such as logging. The successional vegetation that springs up following such disturbance of rainforest is dense and impenetrable and is a ‘typical’ jungle. Jungle also typically forms along forest margins and along stream banks, once again due to the greater available light at ground level.
Tropical seasonal forests and mangroves are commonly referred to as jungles of this type. Having a more open canopy than rainforests, seasonal forests may have denser under-storeys with numerous lianas and shrubs making movement difficult, while the prop roots and low canopies of mangroves produce similar difficulties.
The jungle environment includes dense forests, grasslands, swamps, and cultivated areas. Forests are classified as primary and secondary based upon the terrain and vegetation. Primary forests include tropical rain forests and deciduous forests. Secondary forests are found at the edges of both rain forests and deciduous forests and in areas where jungles have been cleared and abandoned. These places are typically overgrown with weeds, grasses, thorns, ferns, canes, and shrubs. Movement is especially slow and difficult. The extremely thick vegetation reaches a height of 2m (6.5ft) and severely limits observation to only a few meters.
Tropical rain forests consist mostly of large trees whose branches spread and lock together to form canopies. These canopies, which can exist at two and three different levels, may form as low as 10 meters from the ground. They prevent direct sunlight from reaching the ground, causing a lack of undergrowth on the jungle floor. Extensive above-ground root systems and hanging vines are common and make vehicular travel difficult; foot movement is easier. Ground observation is limited to about 50 meters and air observation is nearly impossible.
Deciduous forests are in semitropical zones that have both wet and dry seasons. In the wet season, trees are fully leaved; in the dry season, much of the foliage dies. Trees are usually less dense than in rain forests, which allows more sunlight to filter to the ground. This procedure produces thick undergrowth. During the wet season, air and ground observation is limited and movement is difficult. During the dry season, both improve.
Swamps are common to all low, jungle areas where there is poor drainage. When navigating in a swampy area, a careful analysis of map and ground should be taken before any movement. There are two basic types of swamps—mangrove and palm. Mangrove swamps are found in coastal areas wherever tides influence water flow. Mangrove is a shrub-like tree that grows 1m (3ft)to 5m (16ft) high. These trees have a tangled root system, both above and below the waterline, which restricts movement either by foot or small boat.
Grassy plains or savannas are generally located away from the equator but within the tropics. These vast land areas are characterized by flatlands with a different type of vegetation than jungles. They consist mainly of grasses (ranging up to more than 3.5m (12ft) in height), shrubs, and isolated trees.
Bamboo stands are common throughout the tropics. They should be bypassed whenever possible. They are formidable obstacles and movement through them is slow, exhausting, and noisy.
Cultivated areas exist in jungles also. They range from large, well-planned, well-managed farms and plantations to small tracts, cultivated by farmers. The three general types of cultivated areas are rice paddies, plantations, and small farms.

Rainforest Structure

A tropical rainforest typically has a number of layers, each with different plants and animals adapted for life in that particular area. Examples include the emergent, canopy, understorey and forest floor layers.
  • Emergent Layer
The emergent layer contains a small number of very large trees called emergents, which grow above the general canopy, reaching heights of 55m (180ft), although on occasion a few species will grow to 80m (262ft) tall. They need to be able to withstand the hot temperatures and strong winds that occur above the canopy in some areas. Eagles, butterflies, bats and certain monkeys inhabit this layer.
  • Canopy Layer
The canopy layer contains the majority of the largest trees, typically 30m (98ft) to 45m (148ft) tall. The densest areas of biodiversity are found in the forest canopy, a more or less continuous cover of foliage formed by adjacent treetops. The canopy, by some estimates, is home to 50 percent of all plant species. Epiphytic plants attach to trunks and branches, and obtain water and minerals from rain and debris that collects on the supporting plants. The fauna is similar to that found in the emergent layer, but more diverse. A quarter of all insect species are believed to exist in the rainforest canopy. Scientists have long suspected the richness of the canopy as a habitat, but have only recently developed practical methods of exploring it. The science of accessing tropical forest canopy using airships or similar aerial platforms is called dendronautics.
  • Understory Layer
The understory or understorey layer lies between the canopy and the forest floor. It is home to a number of birds, snakes and lizards, as well as predators such as jaguars, boa constrictors and leopards. The leaves are much larger at this level and insect life is abundant. Many seedlings that will grow to the canopy level are present in the understory. Only about 5% of the sunlight shining on the rainforest canopy reaches the understory. This layer can be called a shrub layer, although the shrub layer may also be considered a separate layer.
  • Forest Floor
The forest floor, the bottom-most layer, receives only 2% of the sunlight. Only plants adapted to low light can grow in this region. Away from riverbanks, swamps and clearings, where dense undergrowth is found, the forest floor is relatively clear of vegetation because of the low sunlight penetration. It also contains decaying plant and animal matter, which disappears quickly, because the warm, humid conditions promote rapid decay. Many forms of fungi growing here help decay the animal and plant waste.
Despite the growth of vegetation in a tropical rainforest, soil quality is often quite poor. Rapid bacterial decay prevents the accumulation of humus. The concentration of iron and aluminium oxides by the laterization process gives the oxisols a bright red color and sometimes produces mineral deposits such as bauxite. Most trees have roots near the surface, because there are insufficient nutrients below the surface; most of the trees' minerals come from the top layer of decomposing leaves and animals. On younger substrates, especially of volcanic origin, tropical soils may be quite fertile. If rainforest trees are cleared, rain can accumulate on the exposed soil surfaces, creating run-off and beginning a process of soil erosion. Eventually streams and rivers form and flooding becomes possible.
Tropical rainforests provide timber as well as animal products such as meat and hides. Many foods originally came from tropical forests, and are still mostly grown on plantations in regions that were formerly primary forest. Also, plant-derived medicines are commonly used for fever, fungal infections, burns, gastrointestinal problems, pain, respiratory problems, and wound treatment.

Cloud Forests

A cloud forest, also called a fog forest, is a generally tropical or subtropical, evergreen, montane, moist forest characterized by a persistent, frequent or seasonal low-level cloud cover, usually at the canopy level. Cloud forests often exhibit an abundance of mosses covering the ground and vegetation, in which case they are also referred to as mossy forests. Mossy forests usually develop on the saddles of mountains, where moisture introduced by settling clouds is more effectively retained.
Dependent on local climate, the altitude varies from 500 m to 4000 m above sea level. Typically, there is a relatively small band of altitude in which the atmospheric environment is suitable for cloud forest development. This is characterized by persistent fog at the vegetation level, resulting in the reduction of direct sunlight. Within cloud forests, much of the moisture available to plants arrives in the form of fog drip, where fog condenses on tree leaves and then drips onto the ground below.
Annual rainfall can range from 500mm (19in) to 10,000mm (394in)/year and mean temperature between 8C (46F) and 20C (68F).
In comparison with lower tropical moist forests, cloud forests show a reduced tree stature combined with increased stem density and generally the lower diversity of woody plants. Trees in these regions are generally shorter and more heavily stemmed than in lower-altitude forests in the same regions, often with gnarled trunks and branches, forming dense, compact crowns. Their leaves become smaller, thicker and harder with increasing altitude. The high moisture promotes the development of a high biomass and biodiversity of lichens, ferns, bromeliads and orchids.

Weather

Jungles are characterized by high temperatures, heavy rains, high humidity, and an abundance of vegetation. The climate varies with location. Close to the equator, all seasons are nearly alike with heavy rains all year. Farther from the equator there are distinct wet (monsoon) and dry seasons. Both zones have high temperatures, heavy rainfall , and high humidity (90 percent) all year. Mean monthly temperatures exceed 18C (64F) during all months of the year. Average annual rainfall is no less than 168cm (66in) and can exceed 1000cm (390in) although it typically lies between 175cm (69in) and 200cm (79in).
Average temperatures range from about 32C (89F)in the day to 21C (70F) at night. High temperatures, heavy rainfall, and oppressive humidity characterize equatorial and subtropical regions, except at high altitudes. At low altitudes, temperature variation is seldom less than 10C (50F) and is often more than 35C (95F). At altitudes over 1,500m (4900+ft), ice often forms at night. The rain has a cooling effect, but when it stops, the temperature soars.
Rainfall is heavy, often with thunder and lightning. Sudden rain beats on the tree canopy, turning trickles into raging torrents and causing rivers to rise. Just as suddenly, the rain stops. Violent storms may occur, usually toward the end of the summer months. Hurricanes, cyclones, and typhoons develop over the sea and rush inland, causing tidal waves and devastation ashore. Prevailing winds vary between winter and summer. The dry season has rain once a day and the monsoon has continuous rain.
Tropical day and night are of equal length. Darkness falls quickly and daybreak is just as sudden.

Wildlife

More than half of the world's species of plants and animals are found in jungles. Rainforests support a very broad array of fauna, including mammals, reptiles, birds and invertebrates. Mammals may include primates, felids and other families. Reptiles include snakes, turtles, chameleons and other families; while birds include such families as vangidae and Cuculidae. Dozens of families of invertebrates are found in rainforests. Fungi are also very common in rainforest areas as they can feed on the decomposing remains of plants and animals.

Survival

Besides water, the other thing you’ll need to survive in the jungle is food. Your food choices revolve around edible plants, fruit, insects and fish.
You can follow these general rules when foraging for plants:
  • Avoid plants with white or yellow berries.
  • Don’t eat mushrooms. Some are safe, but many are highly toxic and even deadly, so it’s not worth the risk.
  • Avoid plants with thorns.
  • If it tastes bitter or soapy, spit it out.
  • Steer clear of shiny leaves.
  • Stay away from plants with leaves in groups of three.
  • Stay away from plants with umbrella-shaped flowers.
  • Avoid beans or plants with seeds inside a pod.
  • Milky or discolored sap is a warning sign.
  • Avoid anything with an almond smell.
Navigation
Rates of movement and pace counts are particularly important to jungle navigators. The most common error is to overestimate the distance traveled. The distances below can be used as a rough guide for the maximum distances that might be traveled in various types of terrain during one hour in daylight.
Type of Terrain Maximum Distance (In Meters/Feet)
Tropical Rain Forest Up to 1,000m (3200ft)
Deciduous Forest 500m (1600ft)
Secondary jungle 100 (330ft) to 500m (1600ft)
Tall Grass 500m (1600ft)
Swamps 100 (330ft) to 300m (980ft)
Rice paddies (wet) 800m (2600ft)
Rice paddies (dry) 2,000m (6500ft)
Plantations 2,000m (6500ft)
Trails up to 3,000m (9800ft)
General Tips
  • With practice, movement through thick undergrowth and jungle can be done efficiently. Always wear long sleeves to avoid cuts and scratches.
  • To move easily, you must develop "jungle eye," that is, you should not concentrate on the pattern of bushes and trees to your immediate front. You must focus on the jungle further out and find natural breaks in the foliage. Look through the jungle, not at it. Stop and stoop down occasionally to look along the jungle floor. This action may reveal game trails that you can follow.
  • Stay alert and move slowly and steadily through dense forest or jungle. Stop periodically to listen and take your bearings. Use a machete to cut through dense vegetation, but do not cut unnecessarily or you will quickly wear yourself out. If using a machete, stroke upward when cutting vines to reduce noise because sound carries long distances in the jungle. Use a stick to part the vegetation. Using a stick will also help dislodge biting ants, spiders, or snakes. Do not grasp at brush or vines when climbing slopes; they may have irritating spines or sharp thorns.
  • Many jungle and forest animals follow game trails. These trails wind and cross, but frequently lead to water or clearings. Use these trails if they lead in your desired direction of travel.
  • Take shelter from tropical rain, sun, and insects. Malaria-carrying mosquitoes and other insects are immediate dangers, so protect yourself against bites.
  • In the tropics, even the smallest scratch can quickly become dangerously infected. Promptly treat any wound, no matter how minor.
  • Even though water is abundant in most tropical environments, you may, as a survivor, have trouble finding it. If you do find water, it may not be safe to drink. Some of the many sources are vines, roots, palm trees, and condensation. You can sometimes follow animals to water. Often you can get nearly clear water from muddy streams or lakes by digging a hole in sandy soil about 1 meter from the bank. Water will seep into the hole. You must purify any water obtained in this manner.
  • Animals can often lead you to water. Most animals require water regularly. Grazing animals such as deer, are usually never far from water and usually drink at dawn and dusk. Converging game trails often lead to water. Carnivores (meat eaters) are not reliable indicators of water. They get moisture from the animals they eat and can go without water for long periods.
  • Birds can sometimes also lead you to water. Grain eaters, such as finches and pigeons, are never far from water. They drink at dawn and dusk. When they fly straight and low, they are heading for water. When returning from water, they are full and will fly from tree to tree, resting frequently. Do not rely on water birds to lead you to water. They fly long distances without stopping. Hawks, eagles, and other birds of prey get liquids from their victims; you cannot use them as a water indicator.
  • Insects can be good indicators of water, especially bees. Bees seldom range more than 6 kilometers from their nests or hives. They usually will have a water source in this range. Ants need water. A column of ants marching up a tree is going to a small reservoir of trapped water. You find such reservoirs even in arid areas. Most flies stay within 100 meters of water, especially the European mason fly, easily recognized by its iridescent green body.
  • Human tracks will usually lead to a well, bore hole, or soak. Scrub or rocks may cover it to reduce evaporation. Replace the cover after use.
  • Plants such as vines, roots, and palm trees are good sources of water.
  • Vines with rough bark and shoots about 5 centimeters thick can be a useful source of water. You must learn by experience which are the water-bearing vines, because not all have drinkable water. Some may even have a poisonous sap. The poisonous ones yield a sticky, milky sap when cut. Nonpoisonous vines will give a clear fluid. Some vines cause a skin irritation on contact; therefore let the liquid drip into your mouth, rather than put your mouth to the vine. Preferably, use some type of container.
  • The buri, coconut, and nipa palms all contain a sugary fluid that is very good to drink. To obtain the liquid, bend a flowering stalk of one of these palms downward, and cut off its tip. If you cut a thin slice off the stalk every 12 hours, the flow will renew, making it possible to collect up to a liter per day. Nipa palm shoots grow from the base, so that you can work at ground level. On grown trees of other species, you may have to climb them to reach a flowering stalk. Milk from coconuts has a large water content, but may contain a strong laxative in ripe nuts. Drinking too much of this milk may cause you to lose more fluid than you drink.
