In 1984, David Bogatin — a convicted Russian mobster and close ally of Semion Mogilevich, a major Russian mob boss — met with Trump in Trump Tower right after it opened. Bogatin bought five condos from Trump at that meeting. Those condos were later seized by the government, which claimed they were used to launder money for the Russian mob.
“During the ’80s and ’90s, we in the U.S. government repeatedly saw a pattern by which criminals would use condos and high-rises to launder money,” says Jonathan Winer, a deputy assistant secretary of state for international law enforcement in the Clinton administration. “It didn’t matter that you paid too much, because the real estate values would rise, and it was a way of turning dirty money into clean money. It was done very systematically, and it explained why there are so many high-rises where the units were sold but no one is living in them.”
When Trump Tower was built, as David Cay Johnston reports in The Making of Donald Trump, it was only the second high-rise in New York that accepted anonymous buyers.
In 1987, the Soviet ambassador to the United Nations, Yuri Dubinin, arranged for Trump and his then-wife, Ivana, to enjoy an all-expense-paid trip to Moscow to consider business prospects.

So by the mid 1990s Trump was then at a low point of his career. He defaulted on his debts to a number of large Wall Street banks and was overleveraged. Two of his businesses had declared bankruptcy, the Trump Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City and the Plaza Hotel in New York, and the money pit that was the Trump Shuttle went out of business in 1992. Trump companies would ultimately declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy two more times.

“I had contacts in Moscow looking to invest in the United States,” Lenz said. “They all wanted to meet Donald. They became very friendly.”Lots of Russian and Eastern European Friends. Investing lots of money. And not only in New York.

Most of her clients are Russian—there are now three direct flights per week between Moscow and Miami—and increasing numbers are moving to Florida after spending a few years in London first. “It’s a money center, and it’s a lot easier to get your money there than directly to the US, because of laws and tax issues,” she said. “But after your money has been in London for a while, you can move it to other places more easily.”
In the 2000s, Trump turned to licensing deals and trademarks, collecting a fee from other companies using the Trump name. This has allowed Trump to distance himself from properties or projects that have failed or encountered legal trouble and provided a convenient workaround to help launch projects, especially in Russia and former Soviet states, which bear Trump’s name but otherwise little relation to his general business.
Enter Bayrock Group, a development company and key Trump real estate partner during the 2000s. Bayrock partnered with Trump in 2005 and invested an incredible amount of money into the Trump organization under the legal guise of licensing his name and property management. Bayrock was run by two investors:
Felix Sater, a Russian-born mobster who served a year in prison for stabbing a man in the face with a margarita glass during a bar fight, pleaded guilty to racketeering as part of a mafia-driven "pump-and-dump" stock fraud and then escaped jail time by becoming a highly valued government informant. He was an important figure at Bayrock, notably with the Trump SoHo hotel-condominium in New York City, and has said under oath that he represented Trump in Russia and subsequently billed himself as a senior Trump advisor, with an office in Trump Tower. He is a convict who became a govt cooperator for the FBI and other agencies. He grew up with Micahel Cohen --Trump's disbarred former "fixer" attorney. Cohen's family owned El Caribe, which was a mob hangout for the Russian Mafia in Brooklyn. Cohen had ties to Ukrainian oligarchs through his in-laws and his brother's in-laws. Felix Sater's father had ties to the Russian mob.
Tevfik Arif, a Kazakhstan-born former "Soviet official" who drew on bottomless sources of money from the former Soviet republic. Arif graduated from the Moscow Institute of Trade and Economics and worked as a Soviet trade and commerce official for 17 years before moving to New York and founding Bayrock. In 2002, after meeting Trump, he moved Bayrock’s offices to Trump Tower, where he and his staff of Russian émigrés set up shop on the twenty-fourth floor.
Arif was offering him a 20 to 25 percent cut on his overseas projects, he said, not to mention management fees. Trump said in the deposition that Bayrock’s Tevfik Arif “brought the people up from Moscow to meet with me,”and that he was teaming with Bayrock on other planned ventures in Moscow. The only Russians who are likely have the resources and political connections to sponsor such ambitious international deals are the corrupt oligarchs.
In 2005, Trump told The Miami Herald “The name has brought a cachet to certain areas that wouldn’t have had it,” Dezer said Trump’s name put Sunny Isles Beach on the map as a classy destination — and the Trump-branded condo units sold “10 to 20 percent higher than any of our competitors, and at a faster pace.”“We didn’t have any foreclosures or anything, despite the crisis.”
In a 2007 deposition that was part of his unsuccessful defamation lawsuit against reporter Timothy O’Brien Trump testified "that Bayrock was working their international contacts to complete Trump/Bayrock deals in Russia, Ukraine, and Poland. He testified that “Bayrock knew the investors” and that “this was going to be the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Moscow, Kiev, Istanbul, et cetera, and Warsaw, Poland.”
In 2008, Donald Trump Jr. gave the following statement to the “Bridging U.S. and Emerging Markets Real Estate” conference in Manhattan: “[I]n terms of high-end product influx into the United States, Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets; say in Dubai, and certainly with our project in SoHo and anywhere in New York. We see a lot of money pouring in from Russia.”
In July 2008, Trump sold a mansion in Palm Beach for $95 million to Dmitry Rybolovlev, a Russian oligarch. Trump had purchased it four years earlier for $41.35 million. The sale price was nearly $54 million more than Trump had paid for the property. This was the height of the recession when all other property had plummeted in value. Must be nice to have so many Russian oligarchs interested in giving you money.
In 2013, Trump went to Russia for the Miss Universe pageant “financed in part by the development company of a Russian billionaire Aras Agalarov.… a Putin ally who is sometimes called the ‘Trump of Russia’ because of his tendency to put his own name on his buildings.” He met with many oligarchs. Also in 2013, Federal agents busted an “ultraexclusive, high-stakes, illegal poker ring” run by Russian gangsters out of Trump Tower. They operated card games, illegal gambling websites, and a global sports book and laundered more than $100 million. A condo directly below one owned by Trump reportedly served as HQ for a “sophisticated money-laundering scheme” connected to Semion Mogilevich.
In 2014, Eric Trump told golf reporter James Dodson that the Trump Organization was able to expand during the financial crisis because “We don’t rely on American banks. We have all the funding we need out of Russia. I said, 'Really?' And he said, 'Oh, yeah. We’ve got some guys that really, really love golf, and they’re really invested in our programmes. We just go there all the time.’”
A 2015 racketeering case against Bayrock, Sater, and Arif, and others, alleged that: “for most of its existence it [Bayrock] was substantially and covertly mob-owned and operated,” engaging “in a pattern of continuous, related crimes, including mail, wire, and bank fraud; tax evasion; money laundering; conspiracy; bribery; extortion; and embezzlement.” Although the lawsuit does not allege complicity by Trump, it claims that Bayrock exploited its joint ventures with Trump as a conduit for laundering money and evading taxes. The lawsuit cites as a “Concrete example of their crime, Trump SoHo, [which] stands 454 feet tall at Spring and Varick, where it also stands monument to spectacularly corrupt money-laundering and tax evasion.”
In 2016, the Trump Presidential Campaign was helped by Russia.

Yes, a lot of the first world off loads its garbage onto the third world and these developing countries, in turn, generate just as much of their own garbage. Garbage that usually ends up in toxic/illegal landfills, into various waterways, or floating out into the ocean only to become a part of the humongous island garbage patches dotted around the globe.
In my case, nothing served as a more startling example of the waste we collectively generate than the local city dump. Occasionally, to get rid of old furniture and other random stuff, we've made trips to such a place as this, which allows you to drop off old junk in a giant dumping ground for a small fee. Even for the modest town I live in, this local dump, which is privately ran and is only one out of a couple for this area, has always had a literal mountain of garbage tens of feet high, by tens of feet long. It's sheltered in a very large half-open warehouse and there's always so much garbage there that it's practically touching the ceiling high above. And yet this is a normal amount of garbage collection for them. One that replicates itself week after week without fail. And they're not even the official dump for the city, which means that massive amount of garbage I've seen constitutes only a fraction of that actually generated by this city. And then, when you try to broaden the picture, every city, large or small, generates its own sizable amount of trash. Think how much trash a place like New York must create on a daily basis. Enough to fill hundreds, if not thousands, of warehouses like the kind I described above. Go bigger and think of the trash generated by entire countries, or entire continents. All the oceans of garbage and waste flowing out from our daily activity. And this happens every single moment, every single week, every single month, every single year. It's truly mind boggling. How we're not somehow buried in it up to our necks by now is astonishing.
I'm reminded of a joke by Bill Burr, when he remarks on the highly accurate, but not often thought about fact, that everything we've ever used is somewhere. Think about your entire life and everything you've ever donated or thrown away. All that stuff is somewhere out there. Crushed beneath a landfill, or floating out in the ocean, or, just maybe, is being used by someone else. It's crazy to think about, isn't it? The history of people's trash. Those both alive and dead have all left their mark in this way.
I can't help, but notice how in every single house, down every single street, and in every obscure little corner of human habitation; people are using things, throwing things away, buying new things, gobbling up electricity to heat their homes in the winter or cool them in the summer, ordering take-out, driving their cars, making plans for international trips which involve air travel, or other things they'd like to do which requires enormous fossil fuel energy. In every major city, at every single moment of the day, people go to stores, they shop, they dine out, they go to the movies, they mingle at nightclubs, they go to amusements parks and take in all the lurid sights they can. And all this happens. Every. Single. Day. Year upon year. I mean, just think of how this already has happened for decades now. From Chicago, to Tokyo, to Melbourne, to Toronto. Every single day. Every single night. How in the hell has it managed to go on for this long? With that much energy and resources being used by so many people, in so many places. By rights, it should have all collapsed within a week, yet it's been chugging along for decades now without stopping. Quite the opposite, it's only grown and grown. It makes me realize just how much there is in nature. How much energy to be exploited, how many animals there are to be slaughtered, how many other resources there are to be extracted. And that, as of now, we've squeezed and consumed every last drop out of it. Resources that could have lasted centuries, if not millennia, assuming they were properly managed, with far less people around to need them in the first place (at least less than a billion). Instead, we've taken all of it and stuffed into every belching furnace we could, simply to keep the infernal engine running. Hotels, restaurants, high price getaway resorts, luxury cruises, casinos, and whatever other bullshit you can think of. All so as to keep the lights on and the music booming in every single city across the world, and doubly so for the major ones. Like I said, it's just staggering to me that it's all lasted this long.
For better or worse, the world is unknown to me. In my case, I've been a hermit for nearly 15 years. I've never partied, or traveled, or done anything at all except sit quietly in my room. A tidy and well kept dungeon of near perpetual darkness, with garbage bags and thick cardboard taped over every window, leaving me lost behind my own wall of near perfect isolation. All I can do is sit with myself, stewing in morbid self-attention or mulling over any number of other equally dreary topics. Too much time spent thinking about all the things I'd rather not think about. One such common thought would be whether or not anything else will ever make itself known to me, or if all that I've come to realize is all there will ever be. Perhaps hedonism is really all there is. Perhaps matters of pleasure, for whatever form that might take for each individual, really are the only point to life. Sometimes I wonder that, if the world is going to die anyway, you might as well get drunk and party like there's no tomorrow and experience as much as you can before it's gone. If this is true, as I sometimes think to myself, then I suppose I've truly failed in my life. I haven't enjoyed myself and I have nothing, even on the most base level, that could warrant my time spent rotting on this planet. No good memories, no traveling anywhere, no having unique experiences. I've been as good as dead from the day I was born. Everything I've seen outside my window or through my computer screen, might as well be like pictures in a book. A faint two dimensional shadow of something that can never be anything more than what it is. Resting in my imagination only, but not even passing as a figment of the real thing. I'm a pale imitation of life. One that wishes I could have at least gotten something out of all this, as bad as it is, despite knowing in my heart that I never will.

Thanks for all the info. I hadn't considered some of what was mentioned here and it's given me more to think about. The world is, indeed, a large place and thus affords a copious amount of room for our trash. I'll admit that I wasn't aware of how efficiently garbage can, sometimes, be disposed of. Then again, in a world where a large amount of the air, food, water, and earth is poisoned, I suppose it doesn't much matter in the end how much or how little garbage it is that we actually generate. Well, like I said, it's still staggering to me how long this has gone on for. Consumerism, starting from 1945 and onwards, has been around for a little over 75 years now and, with it, most of our modern conveniences. That's nothing when compared against the rest of human history, let alone the deep time of the natural world, but I don't know. Like I said, it's dubiously amazing to me that it all even lasted a month. The fact that our current arrangements can last longer than a week at most, is even more dubiously amazing.
As for myself, I've accepted my lot in life. For what little that amounts to, I suppose. Not everyone has a taste for life, or is cut out for actually living as one would ordinarily expect. It's a sad thing, but as long as humans have been around for, there have been people like me who have puttered about in their dreary existences. Those who've just sort of trudged through life carried by their own prior inertia and fear of death. Tens of millions have come and gone who have found themselves in this predicament and, to this day, there are still those condemned to do the same. I'm just another regrettable example of it. It's not fine, but I accept it. I am what I am and, for better or worse, no one should deny who it is they truly are. Even if who they are only brings them pain and puts them apart from nearly every living thing on the planet. That's how it is, but I guess it doesn't stop me from complaining about it, as I've unfortunately done here, so apologies for that.
If there are self-made purgatories, then we all have to live in them. Mine can be no worse than someone else's.
Also, for what it's worth, I'm actually a pretty healthy individual. I engage in at-home exercises, have an extremely clean diet, and take Vitamin D and pro-biotic supplements. I do the laundry, I keep my room exceptionally clean, and, along with my mother, I keep our home well kept and decent. Believe it or not, but these are all things I've done for many years now. And you know what? I still feel the way it is I feel. Garbage bags over the windows and everything. Last year, as a matter of fact, I did enough work around this house to have kept at least 3 separate contractors busy for weeks, but, at the end of the day, I was still left with what I otherwise was. I operated a jackhammer and single-handedly cleared away tonnes and tonnes of old concrete that had been blighting our property for years, only to then do the back breaking work of disposing of it as well. I painted our entire fence, I painted and re-sanded our old deck, and I cleaned up the basement, the garage and the shed from top to bottom. It's partly thanks to what I did that we have a brand new driveway now, since I got the ball rolling on it and significantly reduced the cost through my efforts. But, in the end, I didn't do these things because I was ever asked to do them, but to silence the madness in my mind and to briefly make an escape from my isolation.
I didn't have to do these things, but I needed to all the same. Anything to make the pain inside my heart/mind stop, if only for a little while. Like modern media before I was stricken with anhedonia, these tasks were essentially a form of escapism for me. An escapism used to briefly evade experiencing my own empty existence. I don't know what's wrong with me, but, whatever it is, it's been with me all my life. Aside from my mother, and occasionally my older brother when he comes to visit, I speak with no one. I have no friends and, frankly, I have no idea how to make them. This is as true for the digital world, as it is for the flesh and blood one. I don't know what to do about whatever it is I am, but, as hard as it's been, I've tried to accept that this might just be who I was always destined to be. Plus, it's been so many years now. So many years of this. You fall down a hole long enough and, sooner or later, you can't imagine any other way to be. Well, again, it'd just been nice to get something out of all this, this whole civilization thing, besides just being a hermit. I guess in the age of COVID, that's what everyone's encouraged to be anyway. It's like Junji Ito's Army of One made manifest. Who'd have ever thought.

Sono troppo contento che mi avete votato come Best of 2020, se non lo scrivo mi sento male. Detto ciò, il mio viaggio nella storia del cinema prosegue con il 1969.

Tra i volti emergenti dell’epoca ci sono: Edwige Fenech che compare in 8 film tra cui “Alle dame del castello piace molto fare quello”, che titolo; Florinda Bolkan con la sua criniera spettacolare, Michael Sarrazin dagli occhi celesti, Klaus Kinski sempre cattivissimo, Marilù Tolo, Beba Loncar, Enzo Cerusico e Lino Capolicchio, poi Helmut Berger, Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper e Robert Duvall ovunque, papà Garko e papà Rossi Stuart, Raquel Welch, Dominique Sanda e Katharine Ross.
C’è l’ultimo film di Elvis Presley (il suo periodo migliore coincide con quello di Doris Day e non a caso il declino dei due è stato coincidente, perché a fine anni '60 si percepisce proprio il gusto che cambia e i loro film sono fuori posto), e c’è l’unico 007 con George Lazenby con una incantevole Diana Rigg; nei musicarelli andavano Al Bano e Romina, Mal e Little Tony. Esordiscono Villaggio, Pippo Franco, Lino Banfi ma anche Anjelica Huston. Ci sono tanti drammoni di guerra oltre le 2 ore, che per me sono duri da digerire, idem i musical che durano tanto, tipo “Hello Dolly”, che non è male ma non finisce più e la Streisand è sempre di ¾ come Barbara d’Urso, mi è venuta la cervicale solo a vederla. Tra l’altro nemmeno all’epoca fu un grandissimo successo, anzi l’era dei musical classici praticamente finisce qui.
Ovviamente abbondano gli spaghetti western, quanti ne volete tanti ce ne sono, con Terence Hill, Bud Spencer, Giuliano Gemma, Franco Nero, Anthony Steffen. Però il western che più mi è piaciuto è stato “Il Grinta”, che valse l’oscar a John Wayne. Tra le donne l’oscar invece andò a Maggie Smith che è strepitosa in “La strana voglia di Jean”. Col 1969 si possono vedere anche i primi film del baffuto Fassbinder, e i thriller di Chabrol, che mi sono piaciuti molto.
In tv dalle nostre parti vanno sempre tanto gli sceneggiati, Canzonissima, Mike Bongiorno e cominciano a diffondersi i primi cartoni animati giapponesi tipo Mimì o il mitico Uomo Tigre che lotta contro il male, oltre alla Pantera Rosa e ad alcuni film per la tv che sono già confezionati meglio e sembrano meno di serie Z. C’è una miniserie sui Churchills, c’è la famiglia Brady, Pippi Calzelunghe, e il cult Scooby Doo.
Esce poi un corto chiamato “The lottery” che è un bello choc, qui c’è un innocuo villaggio in cui una volta l’anno si tiene una tradizionale lotteria. Chi vince il primo premio viene lapidato da tutti gli altri partecipanti. Avete mai visto niente di più sconcertante? È su youtube.
Nel 1969 sono sempre più frequenti le scene erotiche e i film sui triangoli sentimentali, sulla bisessualità, sul sadismo (vedi Femina ridens con Philippe Leroy che umilia in tutti i modi la schiava Dagmar Lassander), ma ce n’è per tutti i gusti, c’è in giro Divine, Sarno, Waters, ma anche il nudo-cult di Helen Mirren ancora lontana anni luce dalla fama (nel film Age of Consent), c’è Laura Antonelli, la serie di Emmanuelle e non parliamo poi dei film giapponesi in cui massacrano donne nude come se niente fosse. Ne hanno consumato un sacco di colore rosso in quell’anno lì. C’è un documentario che si chiama “il primo premio si chiama Irene” in cui c’è una parte ambientata in Danimarca con una coppia gay accettata in famiglia come se niente fosse e siamo nel 1969 non 2019! Roba da non credere. Il top del top nel genere però lo raggiunge Ken Russell nel film “Donne in amore” con la scena della lotta tra Alan Bates e Oliver Reed nudi che a quanto pare i due si erano scolati una bottiglia di vodka a testa per paura che l’altro ce l’avesse più grosso. Invece finisce in pareggio in un bagno di testosterone, e nemmeno io ho capito chi mi piace di più. Glenda Jackson pure ha un sacco di scene erotiche qui.
Marlon Brando era assai in declino, aveva deciso di farsi i capelli biondi e sceglieva i film come lo sa solo lui: passa dal thriller a Gillo Pontecorvo, vallo a capire. C’è un film surreale di Robert Downey Senior (giustamente esiste un senior se c’è il junior), e il più figo è sempre Steve McQueen, ma attenzione Steve che Burt Reynolds è dietro l’angolo. Baby Kurt Russell è il Computer con le scarpe da tennis (fa tenerezza questo film è praticamente un’epoca morta e sepolta), e vanno in voga i film sullo spazio visto che questo è l’anno dell’uomo sulla Luna.
Richard Burton è Enrico VIII e vede morta la giovane Bolena Bujold sotto gli occhi della gelosissima vera moglie Liz Taylor, che capitava sul set giusto tanto per marcare il territorio, poi Newman e Redford vanno in giro a fare i fuorilegge, c’è il memorabile viaggio di Easy Rider, e Pasolini e Visconti pure sono attivi, il primo gira Porcile e la Medea, unico film con la Callas e i suoi occhi tristissimi, il secondo con la caduta degli Dei, in cui c’è incesto, pedofilia, omicidio, omosessualità, insomma un film vietato ai minori di 18 anni con una strepitosa Ingrid Thulin che è quella che più mi è piaciuta di tutto il cast. Ci sono ben 2 Satyricon, uno di Fellini e uno di Polidoro, mentre Bergman mette i suoi attori preferiti in un quadrangolo pericoloso, “Passione”, e li intervista anche tra una scena e l’altra.
Ok finalmente passiamo ai miei film preferiti di quest’anno.
“Coming Apart” è un curioso film di Milton Moses Ginsberg con protagonista assoluto Rip Torn e un contorno di attrici tra cui la più nota è Sally Kirkland. Qui c’è Rip che ha messo una videocamera nascosta in salotto, così ogni ragazza che si porta a casa dopo lui che è anche psicanalista si rivede per bene tutta la scena. Noi con lui. Per cui qui c’è una sola inquadratura, c’è Torn vestito, seminudo, nudo, abbottonato, seduto, sdraiato, e la sfilza di amanti e amiche. Uno di quei film che non pensi che riesci a portare a termine e invece poi sì.
“I temerari” di John Frankenheimer è un film con quelle vecchie volpi che erano Burt Lancaster e Deborah Kerr e con l’emergente Gene Hackman, un altro dei nomi cult di quest’anno. Ci sono tre paracadutisti che vanno in giro per la provincia americana a dare spettacolo con i loro lanci acrobatici. Il problema è che Lancaster ha i suoi pensieri per la mente, e a ogni lancio gli viene sempre il dubbio di non aprire il paracadute. Questo non va bene. Giunti nella cittadina successiva, sono ospiti della famiglia della Kerr, specialista in limonate fredde dato che altro non ha da fare. 15 anni dopo il bacio sulla spiaggia di Da qui all’eternità, i due hanno un momento di passione. Il marito della Kerr non batte ciglio: la moglie la conosce bene e lo sa che la deve lasciare libera. Lancaster spera che l’amante lo segua in giro nella sua tournee, per lui la Kerr è il paracadute che lo tiene attaccato alla vita, ma lei non è pronta. Il lancio che segue lascerà tutti a bocca aperta.
“I brevi giorni selvaggi” di Frank Perry con i giovanissimi Barbara Hershey, Richard Thomas e Bruce Davison è un film in cui questi due adolescenti o poco più un giorno incontrano sulla spiaggia la Hershey, bellissima ed estroversa, e se ne innamorano al primo colpo. A lei sta bene questa situazione e i 3 flirtano tutta l’estate. Una ragazza con tutt’altro carattere (Catherine Burns) cerca di unirsi al trio per fare amicizia. Sì, è sveglia, magari anche simpatica, ma per i 3 è più una da prendere in giro quando non c’è altro di meglio da fare. Quando l’estate sta per volgere al termine le intenzioni dei 2 ragazzi sulla Hershey sono ormai troppo esplicite, e l’immaturità e la foga del momento spingono il trio affiatato a un atto di violenza sulla quarta ragazza, in una delle scene più disgraziate mai viste al cinema, che poi porta la malcapitata Burns alla nomination all’oscar al suo esordio. Girerà solo altri 2 film.
“Ucciderò un uomo” è un thriller di Claude Chabrol con il protagonista che ha il figlio piccolo che viene investito da un balordo e muore. L’auto fugge, e nel silenzio dell’alba non ci sono testimoni, il crimine è lasciato quindi impunito. Già vedovo e ora privato del figlio, l’uomo impazzisce e il suo scopo nella vita è cercare l’assassino del figlio e ucciderlo. Impresa tutt’altro che facile, ma l’ostinazione lo portano a mettere insieme piccoli indizi e a trovare la donna che era in auto con l’assassino. Tra i due parte una relazione sempre più intensa che però ha un risvolto imprevisto: ora il novello Montecristo ha imparato a conoscere questa donna e ha anche capito che è tormentata dal rimorso, inoltre il carnefice è il cognato di lei, un essere spregevole: è cafone, bullo, volgare, egoista e fa anche schifo come padre. Troppo bello per essere vero, liberarsi di quest’uomo dovrebbe essere semplice, in fondo non c’è uno che lo vuole vivo. Ebbene…
“Non torno a casa stasera” di FF Coppola pre-padrino con James Caan pre-padrino e Shirley Knight giovane e coinvolgente. La Knight ha lasciato il marito così da un giorno all’altro. È incinta ma non sa cosa fare, quindi si mette in macchina e parte. Si vede che non ha mai visto la tv, perché c’è un autostoppista e lei lo fa salire in auto. È mai capitato nella storia della cinematografia che far salire un autostoppista si è rivelata una buona idea? No, e in questo caso in auto ci va James Caan, ma attenzione, non è pericoloso, al contrario è un povero Cristo. Faceva l’atleta ma si è spaccato la testa e adesso è praticamente un bambolotto cresciuto che quello che gli dici quello fa. Shirley Knight un po’ ne è incuriosita e un po’ infastidita. Caan infatti è come una piattola, innocuo sì ma lei vuole sbarazzarsene, così lo porta da un conoscente affinché gli trovi lavoro. Andata via di corsa da questa rogna, viene fermata per eccesso di velocità. Il poliziotto è Robert Duvall pre-padrino, che vuole abbonarle la multa passando con lei una sera a casa. La Knight non ragiona e ci va, anche se questo vuol dire tornare di nuovo sul luogo dov’è Caan. La sera succede un casino, e ci scappa il morto.
“La mia droga si chiama Julie” di Truffaut con Belmondo e Deneuve. Dunque Belmondo si sposa per corrispondenza. Per quanto difficile da credere non trova moglie e si è affidato agli annunci matrimoniali. Inutile dire che quando davanti si trova la Deneuve non crede ai suoi occhi ed è amore a prima vista. I due si sposano e vanno a vivere insieme. La Deneuve però è una fetentissima ladruncola, e fatto fesso Belmondo se ne va con tutto il suo conto in banca, che è pure tanto dato che Belmondo è imprenditore pieno di soldi. A questo punto Belmondo potrebbe maledire la moglie oppure mettersi sulle sue tracce, e così fa. Dopo un po’ la ritrova e fa per ammazzarla, ma stiamo pur sempre parlando di Catherine Deneuve al culmine del suo splendore, uno non clicca sul grilletto così facilmente, mi dispiace. E inoltre mancano ancora 30 minuti di film.
“Quel freddo giorno nel parco” è uno dei primi film di Robert Altman con Sandy Dennis, icona assoluta della seconda metà degli anni ’60. Alla domanda dimmi l’attrice di cult di fine anni ’60 nomino la Dennis. Qui pare che Altman volesse la Bergman ma lei ha rifiutato lo script ritenendosi offesa del materiale. Così Altman lo passò alla Redgrave la quale suggerì il nome di Sandy Dennis. E così Sandy un giorno guarda dalla finestra e vede un ragazzo sotto la pioggia sulla panchina del parco, così zuppo che ne è mossa a compassione. Prende l’ombrello e va da lui offrendogli di entrare in casa ad asciugarsi. Il ragazzo ci sente, ma non parla, per la Dennis è perfetto: gli puoi dire tutto e non ti contraddice mai. Gli procura vestiti, un bagno caldo, la stanza degli ospiti, gli fa da mangiare. Il ragazzo è divertito da questa situazione, anche se un po’ sconcertato. Il problema è che la Dennis pensa bene di chiuderlo dentro a chiave. Praticamente Misery non deve morire. Mangiata la foglia, lo sventurato scappa, ma la Dennis lo ritrova ed è disposta a tutto pur di riavere il suo bambolotto.
“La terza fossa” è un thriller con Geraldine Page e Ruth Gordon. Geraldine Page era bravissima, veramente, parliamo di quel livello di “bravissima” che hanno poche attrici, capaci di muovere il sopracciglio destro di 2 millimetri facendoti in quel momento capire tutta la trama. Questo non sarà il film più bello della Page, ma è un corso accelerato di recitazione. Poi, giustamente, le sue spalle sono altri due pezzi da novanta e cioè Ruth Gordon e Mildred Dunnock. Comunque, la Page qui è una pazza che fa fuori le sue governanti. Prima le tratta una vera merda, e poi quando si è stufata le uccide, scava una fossa nel giardino e ci pianta un albero giusto per tenere il conto. Così quando fa fuori la mansueta Dunnock, Ruth Gordon decide di fingersi governante per capire come mai la cara Mildred non è più tornata a casa. Scova tutti gli indizi, ma Geraldine Page ha le antenne che funzionano perfettamente, e non si fa abbindolare facilmente. Povera Ruth Gordon.
“Fiore di cactus” di Gene Saks con Walter Matthau, Ingrid Bergman e Goldie Hawn è un tardivo esempio della commedia hollywoodiana classica, quelle che andavano negli anni ’30. Matthau è un dentista sciupafemmine, la Bergman è la sua infermiera e segretaria, da sempre segretamente innamorata del dottore. Ora Matthau spinge troppo sull’acceleratore e vuole scaricare la sua ultima fiamma, cioè la giovane Goldie Hawn, che ha gli occhioni da cerbiatta, e chi incarica di escogitare il modo più adatto? La Bergman. Lei quindi viene coinvolta suo malgrado nei giochi del principale, ma saprà volgere la cosa a suo vantaggio. Qui la Bergman è strepitosa, è rarissimo che abbia avuto ruoli comici, anzi a parte questo su due piedi non ne ricordo altri, ma il ballo del dentista mi fa morire dal ridere. Brava.
“Stephane una moglie infedele” è ancora un thriller di Chabrol con Stephane Audran, Michel Bouquet e Maurice Ronet ed è nella mia top 5 dell’anno, anche se il titolo non mi piace. Comunque Bouquet e Audran sono una coppia felice, così crede lui. Un giorno lui accompagna la mamma all’auto e lei si è scordata gli occhiali, così torna in casa per riprenderli e c’è la Audran al telefono, visibilmente sorpresa. Che vuoi fare Jago, Bouquet ormai gli si è acceso l’interruttore del dubbio. Inizia quindi a controllare con più accuratezza la vita della moglie, solitamente lasciata a casa tutta la giornata. Lei racconta delle sue uscite con amiche, dello shopping, dei massaggi, del cinema, e Bouquet annuisce. Ma oramai non ci crede più. Contatta un investigatore per far pedinare la moglie, e… sorpresa!, ha l’amante veramente ed è Maurice Ronet. Bouquet quindi molto gentilmente un giorno bussa alla porta di Ronet e dice salve piacere di fare la sua conoscenza sono il marito di Stephane, bella la sua casa! Da non perdere assolutamente tutto il dialogo tra i due. Dopo tanti scambi di cortesia Bouquet porta a casa la giornata, diciamo così. Ora bisogna capire se riesce a tornare alla normalità, e cosa ne sarà della moglie. Gran film!
“Non si uccidono così anche i cavalli?” è un film di Sydney Pollack ambientato negli anni ’30, con un cast nutritissimo, capitanato da Jane Fonda, poi Michael Sarrazin dagli occhi azzurri, il veterano Gig Young, l’altro veterano Buttons, l’emergente Bruce Dern e l’esordiente Bonnie Bedelia vent’anni prima di Die Hard. Questo film ricordo di averlo visto in tv da bimbo, secoli fa, ma avevo rimosso tutto. Così quando l’ho rivisto mi dico “uh la maratona di ballo! Dove l’ho già vista?”, “uh guarda ora non ballano li fanno correre, ma io questa scena l’ho vista!”, “uh la coppia con lei incinta che fa di tutto per vincere… me lo ricordo!”, e sinapsi dopo sinapsi mi son ricordato che l’avevo già visto. Solo che quando ero piccolo ricordavo di essere coinvolto dalla trama, ma non mi ricordavo assolutamentissimamente che fine faceva Jane Fonda. Così sono stato sorpreso e mi è piaciuto due volte: uno perché è un bellissimo film e due perché mi ha fatto venire in mente le buste di latte a forma di piramide sul ripiano della cucina e il carrarmato Perugina.
“Kes” di Ken Loach è un film in cui c’è un ragazzino che vive con la madre che lo trascura e il fratello maggiore, un buzzurro che lo maltratta. A scuola è bullizzato, e ha il peggior repertorio di insegnanti mai visto, eccetto forse 1 che lo prende in simpatia, e meno male sennò era fantascienza. Il ragazzino si chiama Casper e come unico momento di serenità ha quello in cui addestra un falco che ha trovato in compagna. È bravo e paziente e per qualche attimo vive la sua età in modo spensierato. Purtroppo non è che siano tanti quei momenti: deve andare a lavorare, fare le commissioni per il fratello, subire tutte le immancabili punizioni a scuola e infine può tornare a casa. Un giorno rifiuta di giocare ai cavalli per conto del fratello, il quale neanche a dirlo avrebbe vinto una buona sommetta, e furibondo decide di riempire di botte Casper. Il bimbo scappa, ma il fratello ha un altro modo per vendicarsi. Per fortuna questo film non dura tanto perché c’è un limite al numero di soprusi a cui uno può assistere, anche se in fiction, ma il problema è che nel momento in cui finisce il film ti accorgi che vorresti continuasse per avere soddisfazione, ma è del tutto inutile, così ci rimani da schifo.
“Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice” è un film di Paul Mazursky con Natalie Wood, Robert Culp, Dyan Cannon ed Elliot Gould. Culp e Natalie Wood sono sposini in cerca di nuove esperienze, e partecipano a una specie di terapia di gruppo in cui ciascuno deve esternare i propri sentimenti e poi tutti si vogliono bene e si abbracciano. Ne escono motivati a dirsi ogni cosa e a non giudicare il compagno. Bob Culp pensa bene di avere un’avventura amorosa e come se niente fosse lo dice alla moglie, la quale non batte ciglio. I due amicissimi Ted & Alice stanno vivendo anche loro un momento di transizione ma sono una coppia affiatata, solo che sembrano meno aperti a certe esperienze. Quando la Wood dice agli amici che il marito ha avuto un’avventura, la Cannon va giù di testa mentre Gould se ne torna a casa tutto eccitato. Imperdibile la scena in cui Gould vuole fare sesso mentre la Cannon non ha voglia, credo sia la scena che è valsa a entrambi la nomination all’oscar. Insomma le cose sembrano essersi normalizzate, ma un giorno Culp torna a casa e scopre la Wood ha pensato bene di avere lei la sua avventura. Una cosa tira l’altra, e i 4 amici finiranno nello stesso letto, ma non è una buona idea. Mai vista la Wood più bella che qui, Culp dal canto suo per una volta si è fatto crescere i capelli lunghi, mentre la Cannon è quella che mi è piaciuta di più.
“Un uomo da marciapiede” è la storia di un ragazzo texano bello e ingenuo, Jon Voight, che lascia il suo lavoro di lavapiatti e va a New York in cerca di fortuna. Ha sbagliato città, epoca, e ha sbagliato sogni. Se fosse in reddit sarebbe in iamverybadass. Invece, flashback dopo flashback, scopriamo che ha vissuto con la nonna, che lo piazzava a letto tra sé e i suoi amanti, scopriamo che lui e la ragazza sono stati vittima di uno stupro, scopriamo che ha subito traumi di ogni genere. I suoi stivali, le sue camicie e il suo cappello sono freschi e puliti, la prima cosa che vediamo di lui è che si fa la doccia, pensa che a New York le donne gli sbavino dietro, in fondo lui è cresciuto con la nonna che cambiava un uomo a settimana, cosa ne può sapere, ma invece finisce che nel giro di pochi giorni le sue speranze sono distrutte. La gente non lo considera proprio, vanno a una velocità diversa. È un alieno. È stato tremendo assistere a quelle scene, questo film ti sbatte in faccia la distruzione delle speranze, l’incapacità di guardare in faccia la realtà in un modo violentissimo. Voight finisce a vivere in una stamberga squallida e fetente con l’unico amico che si è trovato, Dustin Hoffman che zoppica e tossisce malamente, Dio mio, mentre faceva quella tosse io gli volevo prestare le mie mascherine, il Covid ci ha rovinati. New York si abbatte su questi due come un morbo: la metro è inquietante, i vicoli hanno i vetri per terra, nessuno è ciò che sembra e come dice Sylvia Miles "la Statua della Libertà si è fatta una pisciata a Central Park". I due poi vanno a una festa in una casa che ha le scale ripide come ne “La folla” di Vidor, quando muore il figlio ai protagonisti. Quando Schlesinger ha inquadrato quelle scale mi è venuta la pelle d’oca, e ho capito tutto.
Questo film (e Easy Rider pure) è un primitivo esempio anche di film in cui la colonna sonora non è scritta appositamente ma è fatta da canzoni già esistenti e questo lo rende modernissimo. Mi ha spalancato la porta degli anni ’70, non vedo l’ora.

Post-election

On Saturday, Trump announced on Twitter that he has put his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani in charge of his campaign's long-shot post-election legal challenges. Other people on the team include Joseph diGenova, Victoria Toensing, Sidney Powell, and Jenna Ellis.

• Giuliani worked with a Russian agent to smear Biden. diGenova and Toensing tried to get the Justice Department to drop charges against corrupt Ukraine oligarch Dmytro Firtash. Powell represents Michael Flynn and champions "deep state" conspiracies. Ellis said gay marriage leads to pedophilia.

NYT: Mr. Trump turned to Mr. Giuliani earlier on Friday in reaction to the latest setback he faced in court, this one relating to votes in Maricopa County, Arizona… A half-dozen other Trump advisers have described Mr. Giuliani’s efforts as counterproductive and said that he was giving the president unwarranted optimism about what could happen… In an Oval Office meeting with aides on Thursday, Mr. Trump put Mr. Giuliani on speakerphone so the others could hear him. He angrily accused the aides of not telling the president the truth

Giuliani’s conspiracy-riddled rant at Four Seasons Total Landscaping was so disastrous that it “scared off many of the lawyers” recruited to argue election-related lawsuits. Politico: “Campaign officials described the episode as disastrous...there are widespread concerns within Trumpworld and GOP circles that Giuliani’s antics are thwarting the president’s legal machinery from within.”
Two major law firms have withdrawn from Trump campaign cases as his legal challenges crumble. Arizona’s largest law firm Snell & Wilmer dumped the RNC and Trump campaign effort to challenge votes in Maricopa County. Porter Wright Morris & Arthur is abandoning Trump’s attempt to block Pennsylvania's popular vote for Joe Biden.

• In one day (Friday), nine cases meant to attack President-elect Joe Biden's win in key states were denied or dropped - seven in Pennsylvania, one in Arizona, and one in Michigan.

The new federal chief information security officer, Camilo Sandoval, has already taken leave from his day job to participate in a pro-Trump effort to hunt for evidence of voter fraud in the battleground states. The group, Voter Integrity Fund, is a newly formed Virginia-based group that is analyzing ballot data and cold-calling voters. Sandoval was officially appointed on Nov. 4, 2020, but lists his starting date at October on his personal LinkedIn page.

WaPo: Sandoval is part of a hastily convened team led by Matthew Braynard, a data specialist who worked on Trump’s 2016 campaign. Another participant is Thomas Baptiste, an adviser to the deputy secretary of the Interior Department who also took a leave to work on the project. Braynard said in an interview that several other government officials on leave are also assisting the effort, but he declined to identify them.

Several high-profile conservative social media personalities encouraged people to abandon Twitter and Facebook because of their moderation policies, and instead follow them on Parler.
  

Transition

Emily Murphy, the head of the General Services Administration, still hasn’t signed the official letter that would allow the incoming Biden team to formally begin the transition. House Democrats are assessing options to force the GSA’s hand, which could include summoning Murphy to the Hill to testify or suing her. “Obviously, Congress could file suit against the GSA administrator for failing to do her duty. We could seek to get a court to, in fact, issue an order

Her ascertainment is the legally necessary precursor to the government’s assistance to the Biden-Harris Presidential Transition Team. It releases $6.3 million dollars to the team, which is funded by public and private money; a loan of expanded federal office space and equipment; access to government agencies that will begin sharing information and records about ongoing activities, plans and vulnerabilities; national security briefings for the president; and other support.

• The Office of the Director of National Intelligence recently confirmed that it is not providing national security briefings to the president-elect. The Defense Department has also reportedly indicated that it will not meet with the Biden-Harris transition team until Murphy formally affirms the apparent winner.

One of the officials fired in Trump’s latest purge was helping prepare for the transition to the new administration. USAID Deputy Administrator Bonnie Glick was removed abruptly to make way for a Trump loyalist after she had been supportive of transition planning, including the preparation of a 440-page manual for the next administration.
The GSA’s refusal to enact the transition has locked Biden’s team out of crucial Covid-19 pandemic data and government agency contacts. The president-elect’s Covid-19 task force has been trying to work around the federal government by connecting with governors and the health community.

• The head of Operation Warp Speed, Moncef Slaoui, called on the White House to allow contact with the Biden team, saying “It is a matter of life and death for thousands of people.”

White House’s Office of Management and Budget is considering 145 new regulations and other policy changes they could enact before Biden’s inauguration - rules that will be challenging to undo once they are finalized. Critics and supporters of the administration say they expect a final burst of regulations to be finalized in the weeks before Jan. 20.

The rules under development include policies that the incoming Biden administration would probably oppose, such as new caps on the length of foreign student visas; restrictions on the Environmental Protection Agency’s use of scientific research; limits on the EPA’s consideration of the benefits of regulating air pollutants; and a change that would make it easier for companies to treat workers as independent contractors, rather than employees with more robust wage protections.

Last week, both Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said they’re preparing for a second Trump term. “There will be a smooth transition to a second Trump administration,” Pompeo said during a news conference Tuesday afternoon (clip). Pompeo then doubled down on Fox News (clip). “We are moving forward here at the White House under the assumption there will be a second Trump term,” Navarro said on Fox Business Friday (clip).

DOJ interference

Attorney General William Barr stopped career prosecutors in DOJ’s Public Integrity Section from investigating whether President Trump broke any laws related to his conduct with Ukraine last year. The section was initially given the green light to pursue “a potentially explosive inquiry” into Trump, but after the Senate acquitted the president during impeachment proceedings, Barr sent the case to the U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn.
Prosecutors in DOJ’s Public Integrity Section were also prevented from bringing charges against former interior secretary Ryan Zinke by political appointees atop the Justice Department. Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen told prosecutors that they needed to gather more evidence and refine the case against Zinke for lying to Interior investigators.

• The investigation into Zinke stemmed from his decision to block two Native American tribes—the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan—from opening a casino in Connecticut. Zinke’s office had been lobbied heavily by MGM Resorts International, which had been planning to open its own casino very close to where the tribes intended to break ground.

Sixteen assistant U.S. attorneys specially assigned to monitor malfeasance in the 2020 election urged Barr on Friday to rescind his memo allowing election-fraud investigations before results are certified. "It was developed and announced without consulting non-partisan career professionals in the field and at the Department. Finally, the timing of the Memorandum's release thrusts career prosecutors into partisan politics," the prosecutors wrote.
An internal Justice Department investigation found that federal prosecutors who oversaw a controversial non-prosecution deal with Jeffrey Epstein in 2008 exercised “poor judgment” but did not break the law. “They just say he used poor judgment, and that's their way of basically letting everyone off the hook while offering some sort of an olive branch to the victims that we acknowledge weren't treated perfectly,” said Brad Edwards, who sued the DOJ in 2008 on behalf of Epstein accusers.

Immigration news

Eastern District of New York Judge Nicholas Garaufis (Clinton-appointee) ruled that Chad Wolf was not legally serving as acting Homeland Security secretary when he signed rules limiting DACA program applications and renewals. Therefore, in a win for Dreamers and immigration activists, Garaufis said the changes were invalid.

The judge described an illegitimate shuffling of leadership chairs at the Department of Homeland Security, the agency responsible for immigration enforcement, for the predicament of Wolf's leadership and that of his predecessor, Kevin McAleenan.
"Based on the plain text of the operative order of succession," Garaufis wrote in the Saturday ruling, "neither Mr. McAleenan nor, in turn, Mr. Wolf, possessed statutory authority to serve as Acting Secretary. Therefore the Wolf Memorandum was not an exercise of legal authority."

• There's a renewed push to get Chad Wolf confirmed as Homeland Security secretary -- a position in which he's been serving in an acting capacity for a yearr -- before Inauguration Day. In the past week, Homeland Security officials spoke to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's office about bringing the nomination to a floor vote in the coming weeks.

Within the last six months, as the coronavirus pandemic gripped the US, the Trump administration filed 75 lawsuits to seize private land along the US-Mexico border for the border wall." People right now are having to choose between their health and their homes," said Ricky Garza, a staff attorney at the Texas Civil Rights Project, a legal advocacy group.
After a series of price increases, Trump’s border project will cost taxpayers $20 million per mile of border fence. A review of federal spending data shows more than 200 contract modifications, at times awarded within just weeks or months after the original contracts, have increased the cost of the border wall project by billions of dollars since late 2017.
DHS has expelled unaccompanied immigrant children from the US border more than 13,000 times since March, using the coronavirus as an excuse to deny children their right to asylum. Previously, unaccompanied children were sent to government-run shelters as they attempted to pursue their asylum cases.
Migrant children from Central America are being expelled to Mexico, where they have no family connections. The expulsions not only put children in danger - the policy violates a diplomatic agreement with Mexico that only Mexican children and others who had adult supervision could be pushed back into Mexico after attempting to cross the border.
The House Judiciary Committee released a report on the Trump administration’s policy of separating families at the border, revealing that the federal agency that cares for migrant children was not told about the policy. The chaos contributed to the inability to later reunite parents and children.
The Trump administration is trying to deport several women who allege they were mistreated by a Georgia gynecologist at an immigration detention center. Hours after one detained woman spoke to federal investigators about forced hysterectomies at a Georgia detention center, she said ICE told her that it had lifted a hold on her deportation and she faced “imminent” removal. Six former patients who complained about Dr. Mahendra Amin had already been deported.
Northern District of Illinois Judge Gary Feinerman (Obama-appointee) blocked a key Trump administration policy that allowed officials to deny green cards to immigrants who might need public assistance Advocates who had feared that the policy would harm tens of thousands of poor people, particularly those affected by widespread job loss because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Miscellaneous

Microsoft said it has detected attempts by state-backed Russian and North Korean hackers to steal valuable data from leading pharmaceutical companies and vaccine researchers. “Among the targets, the majority are vaccine makers that have COVID-19 vaccines in various stages of clinical trials.”
Two census takers told The AP that their supervisors pressured them to enter false information into a computer system about homes they had not visited so they could close cases during the waning days of the once-a-decade national headcount.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday signaled it’s unlikely to tear down Obamacare over a Republican-backed lawsuit challenging the landmark health care law. Chief Justice John Roberts and Trump appointee Justice Brett Kavanaugh strongly questioned whether the elimination of the mandate penalty made the rest of the law invalid. Kavanaugh appeared to signal on several occasions that he favored leaving the rest of the law intact if the mandate is struck.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) was sued last week by four whistleblowers claiming that he abused his office to benefit himself, a woman with whom he was said to have had an affair, and the wealthy donor who employs her before retaliating against the members of his staff who reported him to the FBI.
The Trump administration is rushing plans to auction drilling rights in the U.S. Arctic National Wildlife Refuge before the inauguration of Biden, who has vowed to block oil exploration in the rugged Alaska wilderness. Biden’s efforts could be complicated if the Trump administration sells drilling rights first. Formally issued oil and gas leases on federal land are government contracts that can’t be easily yanked.

• Battles Green Jacket Lupin in a duel on top of a building. This is the only scene that should be viewed from Red vs. Green despite what Tad says.
  
• Drives off the back of a semi truck onto a highway. His vehicle dropped small, metal bearings that caused the pursuing trucks to crash. Shortly after, he avoids a grenade by forcing his car onto two wheels, after which he drives on the highways guard rail, leaning himself in and out of the vehicle to avoid the street lights. The vehicle then crashes into a dentist office Jigen is in.
  
• Chases a truck full of assassins on a motorcycle
  
• Weaves through a police roadblock
  
• Leaps a motorcycle to a blimp
  
• While being pursued by Edogawa Conan, drives his car out of an exploding boat. This includes him again driving on a guard rail and then riding the vehicle down a pair of hand rails. At the end of the chase, he recovers after being hit by one of Conan's soccer balls.

• Knife fights several assassins at once. The white haired assassin alone was able to block Jigen's shots and kill several people at once
  
• Steals a massive truck from a pair of guards and uses it against a warehouse full of goons
  
• Defeats the "mind reading" Rasputin. He explains he defeated Rasputin's technique by "emptying his mind" . Rasputing was fast enough to catch Goemon off guard and dodges his strikes and caught one of Jigen's bullets in his teeth.
  
• Flips a shoe at Gensai to create an opening to shoot him

Quick Thinking

• While falling, grabs a rope with one hand
  
• Catches a bouncing Walther and shoots a gunman

• Spits a dart into Fujiko's hair

Sleight of Hand

• Removes handcuffs from himself and slaps them on Zenigata
  
• Handcuffs Zenigata's arm to his own leg
  
• Escapes an assassin with a snazzy hat
  
• Pulls a robot's batteries
  
• Handcuffs Zenigata to a boat
  
• Blocks a spear trap with his magnetic grips
  

Disguises

As Lupin uses disguises all the time, gathering every single disguise he uses would fill the entire respect thread. I gathered some of my favorites for this section.

• A jobsite's foreman
  
• Millionaire Howard Heath. He laid it on a little thick and gave away his true self, however.
  
• Fujiko
  
• A prison guard
  
• A KO'd guard
  
• Uses a dummy of himself to convincingly disguise himself as a guard
  
• An old woman
  
• Zenigata's driver
  
• A security guard
  
• Disguises himself as Gensai, the leader of a group of ninja
  
• Fools Zenigata with a hippie disguise
  
• Wears a disguise of himself while wearing a disguise of Zenigata and doing a Zenigata impression that fooled Fujiko
  
• A fat man with a weak bladder.
  
• A tiger. To complete the disguise he also mimics the tiger's roar well enough it fools Zenigata
  
• Two people at once by using a "reflective plastic"
  
• Legendary painter, Sharaku
  
• Convinces a Nazi that he is an aged Hitler
  
• Quickly changes into a mask of a pretty lady in order to catch a pair of gunmen off guard.
  
• Throws on a disguise in the time it takes a man to fall into a snake pit
  
• May have tricked a Prince into thinking he was his father. There's also a good chance the Prince knew it was Lupin, but hey, the disguise looks good.
