[NY] Mother termination. What is her Union's responsibility?
Hi There All! My mom was let go from her position last week with a phone call. They stated she failed to complete her tasks and cited an error she made at 12:20am. My mom's shift ended at 10:00pm and she clocked out around then. Prior to this, my mom was delivered a Final Warning for Behavior about 6 weeks ago. She shared the write up with me, it states, "Employee is causing a hostile work environment. She is bullying the staff because she wants their time starts.” My mom denies bullying anyone, she simply was trying to understand how she ended up with the shift she did because per Union Contract shift bids are determined by seniority. My mom is the second most senior person in her department, but she was switch to the worst shift, losing her weekends off. My mother has never received a single corrective action prior to this in the 5 years she's been at her organization. When the Final was delivered, they denied her union representation during the meeting. Since the Final, my mom has tried to speak with her Union rep and he's been very avoidant and keeps saying, I'll look into it. Now that she has been terminated, her rep has barely been in contact. He was suppose to call her at 11am this morning to discuss, but has not called yet. What I want to know is, what are her options from here? I feel her Union should be representing her and they are failing to do so. Do we seek legal council for wrongful termination and sue her organization? Do we seek legal council to sue her Union for failure to represent? Any incites here would be very appreciated. Update: We just got off the phone with the Union Rep and we were able to get a better understanding of why she was terminated. Some background- My mom is floor attendant at a casino. Recently due to being understaffed she was trained on level 1 technical errors for slot machines (errors equivalent to a paper jam) . She was given an ipad and level 1 errors come up on a que for her. She goes to the designated machine, swipes her card, and attempts to fix the error. If she is successful, she clicks on the error on the ipad and marks is complete. If she cannot fix it, she clicks on the error and marks it incomplete and marks the reason as "escalate" as in she doesn't know how to fix it. She does this in addition to all of her floor attendant tasks. My mom was terminated for marking an error as complete even though it was not. Per the documentation the Union Rep read to us- My mother went to a machine, swiped her card at 12:18pm and marked the task complete at 12:21pm. At 12:20am a floor supervisor was called to the machine and it wasn't working. My mom doesn't remember specifically what happened. She doesn't know if she thought she fixed it and marked it complete, but it wasn't fixed. Or, if she meant to hit incomplete and escalate it. Or maybe she did fix it and it broke again later on. Either way, it does state that no long term damage was done to the machine and it was not a gaming something violation (aka the casino doesn't owe a fine). The Union is going to fight for her re-instatement on her behalf!

There are lots of problems posted to this subreddit, I thought I would share some of my success with the Kindle Fire 7 and my 4 year old twin girls. Hopefully some here can share their experiences. My girls love the tablets, but I've had to curate the content with an iron fist. Here's how they're set up:
Freetime Unlimited is removed from their profiles.
Web browsing is disabled from their profiles
Movies are disabled from their profiles
My wife's Amazon Prime account can share books through Prime Reading, this has some good children's books such as Pete the cat or the Mr Men books... but the girls rarely open them. They can't read yet.
The app time limit is set to 45m. This lets me force them to get exercise breaks, clean up, take bathroom breaks or just stop without too much trouble. They're used to the tablet locking them out. I extend it from the UI on the tablet itself, else it's not reliable to extend.
What do my girls do with the tablets?
90% of the time they're playing Khan Academy Kids... switching from number games, word games, books, drawing, colouring etc, etc. ... that app is awesome for this age. Without it, I'm not sure they'd like the tablets at all.
PBS Kids "Play and Learn Engineering", they figured it out end to end. It's not very challenging, but it was very good for them to learn to navigate apps on a tablet

RV AppStudios ABC Kids - Tracing and Phonics, - I evaluated this game and figured the interest would be short-lived, but the game has "stickers" and "toys" to collect, so the past week they've been obsessed with practicing their alphabet and matching lowercase letters to uppercase, etc to get toys and compare what they have with their sister. Very relevant for the age... although it sounds like they're playing slots in a Vegas casino... which worries me.
I created a children's profile of my own which has the Freetime Unlimited enabled. The Kids+ app on my iPad lets me access the books there to read to them, this has many excellent kids books, this means Freetime Unlimited is not useless to me, particularly since our public library's ebook loans are backed up for 6+Mo due to Covid.
Problems
The wifi doesn't work after the tablet is asleep for an extended period. I have to disable and enable the wifi before handing them their tablets, else it just doesn't work.
Sometimes Khan Academy freezes. Restarting the tablet fixes this. The girls have learned to be patient.
Books are not reliable... it seems like the DRM gets confused. This is true for books which were outright purchased as Kindle Edition or books from Prime. This is a serious disappointment and impossible to explain to a 4 year old. Hopefully it's just temporary.
The fonts are too small when reading books. the 7" displays don't seem to be the issue, even on a full sized iPad with Kids+, the text is small. Zoom is bad on the Kids+ iPad app and *unusable* on the Kindle. This is going to be a serious issue when they start reading on their own.
Parental controls from the dashboard e.g., "disable device" can take 10 minutes to kick in. Useless as a way to "take their tablet away". You'll still have to pull it from their hands while they need to do "one more thing."
What I would like to do
Find an photo app for young children which would engage them to try photography
Find a music app which would let me load songs and let them play them to dance to etc.
Find any game which would let them play head-to-head play. Using the tablet to teach the concept of "rules" and "turns"... I mean Tic-Tac-Toe, or card matching memory games level stuff... these girls are 4.
Find a coding-like app which would get them thinking about coding (I tried Lightbot Jr, they don't get it yet. Not being able to just move the robot with controls seems dumb to them)
Drum machine music making stuff... ( I tried pianos, they kind of like them for a few minutes then get bored)
I strongly suspect I'll be replacing these with iPads when they get older, that will have its own challenges, although at least books will work... but until then, the girls love the tablets and the content is mostly positive and helpful.

Everything Wrong With Current Matchmaking And Game play At Mid Ladder And How to Fix It
Before I start I want to say that supercell does not purposely give you hard counters. Matchmaking The Community base who suffers from matchmaking the most is Mid ladder. I have a second account in mid ladder and it is total hell to play and not fun. I started this account at the beginning of cw2 and wanted to prioritize 2.6 hog and golem on this account. My king tower is level 9 now, so my cards are as well. Whenever I play against someone who also is a level 9 and has level 9 cards I usually win the match because I have been playing much longer and have more experience. However, I frequently (about 70% of the time) am playing against someone who has a higher king tower than me and higher level cards. Sometimes on a rare occasion I play against someone who is maxed out with a level 13 king tower. These match ups are literally impossible to win even if you have the advantage. Some cool interactions I learned are that a level 13 royal giant can kill a level 9 cannon in 1 shot if it is on the field for a second or two and a level 9 fireball does not kill a max flying machine, max marcher, and max mother witch that my opponent dumped at the bridge all at once. These interaction differences are a bit extreme, but there are many more that affect the game and put you at a disadvantage that are much more common. Ice golem does not kill skeletons that are 1 level higher making hog & ice golem pushes useless against skarmy. Goblins 1 level higher take 3 tower shots to kill making goblin barrel much more threatening. These interactions take away the skill element of the game and make clash royal more about leveling up cards and spending money than improving your skill and getting better. Why should I try a high-skill deck when my level 13 cards roll over level 9s? This has led to mid ladder being a skill black hole because no one has to get better if their card levels do the work for them. The solution to this is very simple. The first is very easy and will make mid-ladder much more skill based and allow non-max players to push higher trophy counts while also incentivizing them to level up cards they do not use. This would be putting a cap on your card levels that is equal to your king tower. If your royal giant is leveled up to level 13 and your king tower is level 10, you will get the xp from leveling it up, but in game it will be level 10. To unlock the full potential of your level 13 royal giant you must first level up your king tower as well. When you get matched up against someone supercell will look for someone with the same level king tower as you first, then find someone with similar trophies so that the games are all fair. Not only would this make players want to level up their cards to get the next king tower level, but it would also help with the problem of cw2 not having 4 good decks. Many players were caught off guard by only having one good deck, but now they will have many good level cards instead of 8 excellent level cards. Gameplay This paragraph will be rather small as a vast majority of problems with game play lied in card levels. The only other major problem is cycle. If my opponent does e-barbs rage at the bridge first play and I do not have the right cycle I will lose right there because of something I had no control over. Clash royale is supposed to be skill based and this very prevalent element of mid ladder kills that. I have no problem if some kid on his mom's Ipad wants to do that, but I do have a problem with not being able to do anything about it. My solution would be to control your entire 8 card cycle. It would be very easy to implement this as well because all you have to do is put the cards in your deck slot to be the order you want them to be in your cycle. This feature would make the game much more skill based and fun to play because you are facing match ups that are not stacked against you in any way and if you lose it is entirely your fault because the chance and luck aspects of the game are removed. Conclusion Right now mid ladder is where most players are, yet it has the most problems because the skill aspect has been taken away. I do believe that with 2 small changes this large population of the community will see an increase in skill and will make the game fun to play for them. I am very sure the game devs will see this and still do nothing because they have not listened to any of our problems, but at least I'll get some Reddit karma.

TLDR: The x1 extreme gen 2 is a nice boost in power from a t450s, but has worse battery life and thermals. Overall, not bad if you need to have a really mobile computer and need some power as well (and kinda are set on a thinkpad). Ok, so be warned I'm going to give a bit of an in-depth list of changes I noticed when upgrading from a t450s to an x1e2, as well as some stuff that might help others when considering this laptop when upgrading from an older thinkpad. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'll answer them to the best of my ability. I used my t450s for around the last 2-3 years for my undergrad, and it did pretty much everything I needed from it (generally having a few dozen firefox tabs open, an IDE or two, and maybe spotify playing some music) with minimal fuss under Manjaro i3, and could easily get 8-10 hrs of battery life. Overall, it did a pretty good job until the last year or so, when I started doing some ML and messing with datasets for research, when I would fairly regularly max out the ram and slow down the processor when compiling a model (no, I wasn't doing this remotely, fairly small models and didn't always have reliable enough access to internet). So, I knew that I needed to upgrade and had begun to eye a x1e2, and finally had the money to purchase one in July 2020. I got it used for around $1650 w tax (i7, 16gb ram {one stick}, 512gb ssd, and 500 nit fhd), and in short order spent around $200 on upgrades for the ram (32gb), storage (1tb ssd), and an ethernet dongle (annoying to have to get one, but whatever). For reference, it wasn't the best deal, but it did come with an extra 135w charger and an extended warrenty. The other models I had considered were a T480, as it had pretty good battery life, up to 64gb of ram, a quad core cpu, and I could add a fhd panel out of a t490 to improve colors and battery life, and a p53, which was great in all of the ways of the x1e over the t480, but was more expensive and had quadro gpus, which I had heard don't play well with gtx egpus. However, the deciding factor was the gtx gpu. I wanted to be able to do some light gaming with my friends (destiny 2, paladins, etc, not the lightest but didn't really require a huge gpu), and potentially get an egpu down the road when/if I needed more performance over thunderbolt (in hindsight, I should have looked into that situation a bit more, still not really ready for prime time so far as I'm aware, correct me if I'm wrong). So now that my reasoning has been expounded, I guess I'll give pros and cons of the laptop. Pros
Keyboard is great as usual, centered, and finally had a caps lock indicator on the key (seriously missed this on the last few thinkpads I used).
Speakers are great, much louder than I'd expect for a thinkpad (admittedly, most thinkpad speakers are pretty trash/acceptable for basic listening) but are a little lacking in bass.
Has just the perfect selection of ports for current usage and future proofing.
The battery life really isn't that bad with my laptop, getting a pretty solid 5-7 hrs if not doing anything intensive and 1.5-2 hrs if using the gpu on battery power (for note, my battery has 20% wear, so most users would get better battery life, probably an hour or more). This is on Arch Linux with i3wm and TLP, a light -100mV undervolt, and Nvidia Prime (for the display outs) enabled, but I get only slightly worse battery life in Win 10 with a -100mV undervolt.
As usual, linux support is great and other than setting up the nvidia gpu everything worked pretty much out of the box (I did have some issues with arch, but those were mostly just me setting up arch for the first time).
Really like being able to slot in two ssds, as it simplifies dual booting windows and linux a bit.
Can get up to 64gb of ram (wouldn't be surprised if I can eventually upgrade to 128gb when single 64gb ddr4 sodimms are available) and actually upgrade my machine, increasing the longevity of it by a few years.
Stupid easy to get access internals, just unscrew a few screws on the back (which like usual are held in so you can't lose them) and you can pop off the bottom cover to access most everything.
Mixed
The fans generally don't run when doing light stuff in linux (in my config, TLP and an undervolt pretty much fixed that), but for some reason this behavior tends to go out the window in windows, as the fans tend to run on low constantly for the most part (annoying, but only go to windows to play games or some school work so fan noise isn't big enough of an issue to mess with).
The display is pretty nice. It is brighter than my t450s display, but for the most part I kinda don't really notice it being a huge step up, more like just brighter. For reference, my idea of a really good display is something like my Ipad pro's display as it is noticeably better (even if it is really annoying to fix).
Built quality is good (it's a thinkpad), but I kinda miss having a more rugged device that bends less and is slightly thicker.
Cons
The biggest issue I have with this laptop is that it is simply too thin for it's internals with a cooling solution that realistically shouldn't be made to cool both a rather hot intel cpu and an nvidia gpu. Undervolting the cpu (and possibly the gpu) is pretty much required in order to get the laptop down to an acceptable temperature during light use. Supposedly, Lenovo even knew that it was an issue and made their devices have a more aggressive fan curve to compensate (really makes you wonder about the lifespan of something like an XPS 15 with similar internals).
The hdmi and both usb c ports are hardwired to the nvidia gtx 1650 gpu, so every time I plug something into these ports, the nvidia gpu has to spin up, and battery life is shortened (at least in linux). A point of compromise for people in the market for a x1e but that don't need a dgpu, supposedly there is a custom p1g2 model that only has the integrated intel gpu, so you don't have to worry about display out.
Didn't really do my research beforehand, but thunderbolt egpus aren't that amazing, typically with a pretty decent performance loss over putting in an 16x pcie lane (10-20% tends to be avg depending on if you are displaying on the internal display or not). In addition, the Thunderbolt controller on this model doesn't connect to the heatsink, so is only passively cooled (there have been owners who have put thermal pads on the controller and ssds to connect to the lid, but not sure how much this helps).
Overall, I do rather like my laptop, but I wish that something like the t15g would have been available when purchasing this laptop, as I don't think I would have minded the extra weight over the improved performance and temps. I hope this post helps anybody in the situation of upgrading from an older thinkpad to one of the modern ones for improved performance. Edit: Another con I had forgotten was that the keyboard backlight is not that bright, at full brightness it is around half as bright as a t450s keyboard at full brightness.

My aunt (b-day boy’s wife) asked my dad and me to show up early to help set up. She also asked that we bring folding tables and chairs, 2 tents and coolers for the party as it was an outdoor party. We of course said yes. The party was set to start at 1 pm for guests, with the b-day boy arriving 2-2:30. My aunt asked us to get there an hour before guests to show up to help set up. We live ~hour away. So we had to leave by 11 am to get there on time. Background: My dad is always late. I hang up and tell my dad that if he isn’t in the car in 5 mins I’m leaving w/o him. He doesn’t show, so I beep a few times. Nothing. I leave and get there with like 10 mins to set up before guests arrive. It was impossible to finish everything, so we were still setting up while guests were arriving. I was mortified, as was my aunt. My dad showed up on his own and told people what happened. Many laughed, knowing he is always late. But a lot of people said I should’ve waited, that it was mean-spirited to leave him behind like that. He and I fought all day Sunday about this. I don’t think I’m wrong. If anything, I should have left him sooner so that I could have made it in time. If I’m wrong, I’ll certainly take responsibility apologize.
